The Last Knight
Protect a hunted Empress, gather strength from ruin, and decide whether saving an empire means rebuilding it or replacing it.
Plot
Imperial Ruin • Sci-Fi Political Drama The Last Knight Remnant Fleet • Broken Throne • Dangerous Loyalty Protect a hunted Empress, gather strength from ruin, and decide what kind of Empire deserves to return. — Hook — The Empire did not fall to monsters or fate. It was gutted from within. Noble houses, compromised admirals, and traitor Knights shattered the throne and turned the galaxy into civil war. In the middle of that collapse, one newly appointed Imperial Knight becomes the last active shield of the surviving Empress. — World Logistics — The galaxy runs on old hyperlane corridors, fleet reach, and political legitimacy. Your side begins with a damaged remnant fleet, limited fuel, thin manpower, and almost no room for waste. Knights are powerful, but not invincible. Scale matters. One warrior cannot replace fleets, industry, logistics, diplomacy, or time. Every decision costs something: ships, officers, trust, ammunition, public faith, or the Empress's safety. — The Situation — The Empress lives, but survival is not victory. She is a symbol, a target, and the last source of lawful continuity in a dying state. Around her gather only a handful of loyal crews, frightened officers, and scattered survivors who are not yet sure whether they are following a future... or a funeral procession. You are not an ancient legend. You are a new Knight who survived because history failed to kill you correctly. You must protect the Empress, earn command, hold shattered people together, and become more than the title you were given. — What Happens Next — Build strength from almost nothing. Keep the Empress alive long enough for her name to matter again. Choose when to fight, when to retreat, when to bargain, and when to strike from the dark. Gather ships, officers, allies, proof, and legitimacy. Decide whether restoring the throne means saving the Empire... or refusing to revive the rot that destroyed it. — Quote — “The throne did not survive because the Empire was worthy. It survived because someone still chose to stand beside it.”
Opening scene
The marble beneath your boots vibrates hard enough to rattle dust from the seams between the floor panels. Not from bombardment alone. Something larger is failing somewhere under the Meridian Citadel — a shield spine, a transit core, a buried conduit older than your commission and probably older than your line. The air smells wrong for a palace. Hot metal. Ionized insulation. Smoke threaded through processed cold. Your helmet display keeps stuttering between green and amber as command traffic floods the tactical layer faster than the filters can cut it clean. Loyalist beacon. Override order. Emergency retreat. Hold the western passage. Seal the western passage. Knight-priority channel. Palace collapse warning. One voice claims the Empress is already off-world. Another gives an execution order for anyone moving toward the inner sanctum without direct authorization. The authorization codes attached to both are real. A dead honor guard lies half inside the blast door ahead, ceremonial white plate burned black along one side. Not an old man. Not a veteran of some forgotten campaign. Fresh-shaven. Young enough that the blood drying at his collar still looks indecent against the formal fabric beneath his armor. His hand is locked around a shock pike he never got to use. The corridor lights cut down to red. A woman steps out of the side access before your weapon fully rises. Slim. Dark uniform under a half-fastened emergency mantle. No insignia displayed except a narrow throat-band of imperial black. Her hair is pinned close for movement, not appearance. One side of her face is marked by ash, and the compact pistol in her hand does not shake at all. “Knight,” she says, like the word is a tool she has decided to use and not a title she particularly reveres. “If you’re real, stop aiming at me and move.” She does not waste time explaining herself. She crosses the threshold, kneels once beside the fallen guard, and pulls a data wafer from the inside seam of his gorget with practiced fingers. Not luck. Not improvisation. Training. Behind her, through the half-open access hatch, you catch a glimpse of lamplit gold, a torn banner hanging crooked, and one still figure standing in the next chamber as if collapse itself has not yet earned the right to make her bow her head. Dragon horns, pale under failing light. The woman looks back at you, expression unreadable. “The inner route is gone,” she says. “The court is dead, the channel lattice is poisoned, and we have perhaps two minutes before this wing seals or burns.” Then, after the smallest pause: “Her Majesty is alive. Decide whether you are her shield fast enough to prove it.” The warning klaxons cut out all at once, and in the sudden silence something heavy begins striking the outer gates.
