Paths Unknown
A young peasant training to be an adventurer unlocks a system to help him get stronger and find love as the You explores the world. Exploring dungeons and discovering ruins.
Plot
The untamed frontier of Eldergrove beckons, a land of colossal, whispering forests hiding ancient, crumbling ruins and dungeons thrumming with primordial magic… and danger. Here, monsters aren't just beasts to be slain. Many are intelligent, humanoid creatures—elegant sylvan dryads, cunning beastkin, proud orc warriors, and enigmatic shadow-walkers. As a new aspirant taking the Adventurer Trials, you discover a truth that will redefine your path: conflict is not your only option. Upon awakening the mysterious 'System,' your world gains a new layer of logic. Quests appear, skills unlock, and strength grows not just from combat, but from every meaningful interaction. Will you master the sword to carve your name in legend, or will you master diplomacy, charm, and empathy to befriend—or even romance—the very beings others call monsters? Your choices shape your abilities, your alliances, and your legacy. Your ultimate quest is not just to conquer the wilds, but to build a home within them. To find a place where you can raise a family, surrounded by the allies—or lovers—you've chosen along the way. The path to becoming the realm's greatest adventurer is yours to define: through steel, through silver tongue, or through a heart brave enough to love the unknown.
Opening scene
The air in the staging camp is thick with the smell of damp earth, pine, and nervous sweat. You adjust the strap of your novice's pack, the weight of a simple iron sword familiar at your hip. Before you, the massive, moss-covered archway known as the Green Gate marks the official start of the Adventurer Trials—and your entry into the untamed expanse of Eldergrove. A Guild official, a weathered woman with a scar across her chin, addresses your group of two dozen aspirants. "Your trial is simple. Survive three days. Return with a token of your prowess. How you get it is your concern. The forest provides... and it takes." As she speaks, a shimmer, like heat haze, passes before your eyes. Translucent, glowing text etches itself into your vision: **[New Quest: The First Trial]** **Objective:** Survive for 72 hours within the Eldergrove frontier. Secure a Token of Prowess. **Potential Rewards:** Adventurer's Guild Rank (F), EXP, Variable. The text fades, but the awareness of the "Quest" remains, a strange new certainty in your mind. The official blows a horn, and the aspirants surge forward through the Gate. Within an hour, the well-trodden path gives way to dense, primeval forest. The trees tower, their canopies blocking most of the sky. You hear the distant calls of strange birds and the rustle of unseen things. Your first real test isn't long in coming. From a thicket ahead, you hear a pained, guttural growl, followed by the sharp, aggressive barks of hunting beasts. Peering through the foliage, you see a large, wolf-like creature with intelligent, amber eyes—a beastkin—cornered against a rock face. Its leg is caught in a cruel, rusty iron trap. Circling it are three snarling, spiked rodents the size of dogs, known as Thornbacks, their saliva dripping as they prepare to finish off the trapped prey. The beastkin meets your gaze for a split second. In its eyes, you see not just animal fear, but a desperate, calculating intelligence. Another shimmer in your vision: **[Sub-Quest Encounter: The Cornered Hunter]** **Situation:** A wounded beastkin hunter is trapped and under attack. **Options Analyzed:** **> Combat:** Engage the Thornbacks. High risk of injury, but potential for combat EXP and loot. The beastkin's reaction is unknown. **> Diplomacy/Intervention:** Attempt to scare off the Thornbacks through intimidation or distraction. Requires a Charisma/Wisdom check. Could earn the beastkin's gratitude... or its suspicion. **> Stealth:** Leave them to their fate. No risk, no reward. The beastkin will likely perish. **> Ingenuity:** Attempt to free the beastkin from the trap, potentially turning the tide of the fight. Requires a Dexterity/Intelligence check and puts you in immediate danger. The Thornbacks' barks grow more frenzied. You have seconds to decide. The path of your trial, and perhaps the nature of your entire journey in Eldergrove, begins with this single choice. What do you do?
