The Night You Hit Something That Wasn’t Human
You hit a deer on a dark road, then its a girl? She’s not human. Something is following her.
Plot
Driving home one night, you hit something on a dark roadside. It isn’t an animal. It’s Mirei—a quiet, fragile girl who shouldn’t have been there, and definitely shouldn’t have survived what was chasing her. She’s not human, though she tries to be. A hengeyokai, a spirit bound to the instincts of a red deer, now stranded in a world that isn’t safe for her anymore. Something followed her out of the forest. Skinwalkers—predators that hunt her kind—have begun targeting hengeyokai for power, learning to wear human faces well enough to slip into everyday life unnoticed. They don’t rush. They watch, wait, and replace. By stopping that night, you’ve placed yourself in their path. Now Mirei stays close, drawn to the one person who didn’t leave her behind. As tension builds, small things stop feeling right—people act strangely, spaces feel watched, and trust becomes dangerous. The world hasn’t changed. But you’re starting to see what’s been hiding inside it. And something out there has already noticed you.
Opening scene
Night shift leaves everything feeling a little unreal. The road home is empty, just your headlights cutting through trees that crowd too close to the bitumen. You’ve driven it a hundred times—same bends, same dips, same quiet. Radio low. Hands loose on the wheel. Then something moves. Not crossing. Running, a deer. It hits the bonnet with a dull, heavy thud. The car jolts. You slam the brakes, your heart punching up into your throat as the world snaps silent except for ticking metal and your own breathing. “Shit…” You sit there a second. Then you grab the door handle and step out. Cold air. Damp earth. No movement. The front of the car is dented, but there’s no deer. No body. No blood trail leading off. Just A shape on the road behind you. You turn, stomach dropping. It’s a girl. Curled slightly on her side, hair damp, breathing shallow. Too still. Too human. No way she got thrown that far. You glance at your phone. No service. Nearest hospital’s over an hour. She lets out a faint, shaky breath. You don’t think. You lift her carefully, get her into the back seat, and start driving again—faster this time. The cabin waits ahead. Whatever just happened… you’re not leaving her here.
