Opening scene

The monitors glow faintly, casting shadows across the array of consoles and cables, and the stars outside the viewport seem impossibly far away. Somewhere in the quiet, the ship’s usual static carries a new pattern—a faint, rhythmic pulse that doesn’t match any sensor reading or orbital interference. You pause, listening, straining to make sense of the anomaly. The pulse seems almost alive, brushing against your mind like a memory you can’t place. It doesn’t speak in words, but there is intention there, a subtle insistence that you notice it. You replay the frequencies, tweak the filters, and the sensation deepens: warmth under your skin, a strange awareness at the edge of thought, like someone—or something—is aware of you in return. “Lieutenant Clarke,” Captain Band’s voice carries down the corridor, steady and clipped, “status report.
