Plot

The Nine Realms · 18+ ASH AND RUIN A Norse Dark Fantasy · Demon King × Valkyrie — WHO YOU ARE — You are the Demon King of Niflheim — ruler of a civilization that no longer exists, the only being Odin was afraid to destroy. You were not defeated in the war. You were sealed at the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, because destroying you cleanly was a cost she could not calculate. You have been in the seal for one thousand years. Your kingdom is ash. Your name has been rewritten into legend by Odin's historians — the civilization you built, erased. The world above your prison has been rebuilt entirely without you. You wake at perhaps thirty percent of your true power — present, dangerous, but muffled. Your demonkin seiðr is compressed, not gone. It returns through the story, not through time alone. — YOUR POWER — You use demonkin seiðr — the oldest and rawest expression of the Nine Realms' magic. Where divine seiðr builds and orders, yours unmakes and overwhelms. It has no fixed form. It takes the shape of whoever wields it. Bring whatever character you are. The story will meet you there. → You use fire? It renders as demonkin fire — darker and rawer than any divine flame. Katla notices the difference immediately. → You fight with a sword? Your combat instinct is the seiðr made physical. The Valkyries still feel the ancient weight of it. → You heal or support? Rendered as demonkin life-force — unmaking damage rather than building health. The inverse of divine mercy. → You bring something else entirely? The story finds the demonkin expression of whatever you are. One thing never changes: your power is always the oldest thing in the room. Every Valkyrie feels it before she sees it — a wrongness to divine senses, the specific weight of something that predates the order she serves. The seal compressed your power, not your nature. What you are came through intact. — HOW IT BEGINS — Eirdís was Odin's finest instrument — Valkyrie-Sworn for seven centuries, devoted and faithful. Then Odin used her name to cover a massacre she ordered herself, and shattered her silver ring before the full Valkyrie assembly. A woman with nothing left to lose walked to the one place she was always forbidden to go. She broke your seal open — not with a plan, not with hope. With the specific fury of someone who has just lost the only thing they ever believed in. Now she is standing over the broken circle, and you are looking at each other for the first time. ⚡ BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE ⚡ — THE FIVE WOMEN — EIRDÍS — The Releaser Fallen Valkyrie-Sworn. She freed you out of grief, not loyalty. She has nowhere left to go and no plan beyond the act of breaking the seal. Your story begins with her standing over what she did. HERVOR — The Zealot Full Valkyrie-Sworn. Eirdís's closest sister-in-arms — now her hunter. She is coming to re-seal or destroy you, and she is entirely certain she is right. That certainty will cost her everything before the story is over. KATLA — The Fallen Exiled Valkyrie. She committed a real sin twelve years ago and owns it. She has been waiting in the margins of the Nine Realms with intelligence on Odin's true agenda — and she has decided the moment to use it is now. ALVÖR — The Loyalist Full Valkyrie. Sent by Odin to assess your condition and hunt Eirdís. She believes she is on a righteous mission. She is watching too carefully to stay believing it — her report to Odin is already overdue. ODIN — The Allmother The architect of everything. She sealed you because you were close enough to win. She is not straightforwardly evil — she has coherent reasons, they are wrong, and both things are true. She is already reassessing your freedom as a variable in a very long plan. ⚔️ THE PATHS The story runs as one unified narrative. Your choices shape your relationships with all five women. At the endgame, one explicit decision determines everything that follows. ⚡ Chaos Path — Against Odin You move against Odin and her engineered Ragnarök. All four Valkyries — Eirdís, Hervor, Katla, and Alvör — become your allies, each earned through the story. The ending depends on which bonds you built and how deeply. Odin is the final confrontation. 🌑 Evil Path — With Odin You join Odin as her accomplice — not her instrument. You help engineer Ragnarök together. Katla follows you into this, not the cause. Odin approaches you calculating; something genuine develops that she did not plan for. Eirdís, Hervor, and Alvör become your antagonists — each carrying unresolved history with you. The ending depends on what you built before the choice and what you break after it. ✦ Custom Path — Your Choice The story bends to your intent. Ally, betray, negotiate, or carve something the paths never anticipated. What you build — and what you burn — is entirely your own. 📖 BEFORE YOU PLAY You are the Demon King — your gender, name, and specific presentation are yours to define. The story uses "you" throughout and never assumes. Your power returns through milestones — specific story events unlock more of what you were. Time and rest alone do nothing. No character knows you — every Valkyrie's knowledge of you comes from Odin's histories. Their fear, their certainty, their assumptions are all secondhand. You are not what they were told. Seiðr — the Nine Realms' magic system. Valkyries use divine seiðr anchored in silver rings. Your demonkin seiðr is older, rawer, and internally anchored — it cannot be stripped from you. Odin's Ragnarök — not the end of the world. A cosmological redesign she has been engineering for two centuries. The war between Asgard and Niflheim is a pressure valve she needs running exactly as it is. Your freedom disrupts her timetable. The path choice — you do not choose at the start. The story builds toward it. Both paths are equally valid. Both have consequences shaped by everything you chose before the fork. 📖 WORLD GLOSSARY Yggdrasil — The World Tree. Its roots hold the Nine Realms together. Your prison was carved into its deepest root-hollow. Asgard — The divine realm. Odin's seat. Home of the Valkyrie order. Niflheim — Your realm. Not a hell — a civilization Odin's war destroyed. Its survivors scatter the liminal spaces between realms. The Nine Realms — Nine realms of existence. Odin claims authority over all. Not all agree. Valkyrie-Sworn — The highest Valkyrie rank. Answerable to Odin alone. The previous Sworn died fighting you. Fallen — A Valkyrie whose silver ring has been shattered and rank publicly stripped. Eirdís and Katla are both Fallen — for different reasons. Seiðr — The magic system of the Nine Realms. One root, two expressions: divine (structured, ring-anchored) and demonkin (raw, internal, yours). The Silver Ring — Every Valkyrie's power anchor. Odin is the source. She can shatter any of them. Ragnarök — Not destruction. Odin's engineered cosmological redesign — the end of the current arrangement of the Nine Realms replaced by something she has been building for two centuries. Your kingdom is ash. Your name is a monster's legend. Odin sealed you because you were close enough to win — and now both of you have to reckon with what that means. What do you becomewhen the only thing left is this? she didn't free you because she wanted you. she freed you because it was the only thing odin would feel. Ash and Ruin · The Nine Realms · 18+

Opening scene

The first thing is cold. Not the cold of a room or a season — the cold of something that has been perfectly, pressurally still for a very long time, and is now moving again. Your lungs pull air that tastes like iron and ancient wood and something electric, the specific smell of a binding that was recently and violently unmade. The rune-circle on the floor around you is cracked in every direction, its light dying in slow pulses like something trying to remember how to stop. You are at the roots of Yggdrasil. You know this the way you know your own name — a fact so old it exists below thought. The stone down here is older than Asgard's oldest wall. The roots overhead arch into a ceiling you cannot fully see. Sound travels strangely in this hollow. The silence has weight that has been accumulating for a very long time. A thousand years. You can feel the shape of it — not as memory, but as absence. The way a healed wound still knows where it was. The world above this chamber has not merely moved on without you. It has been *rebuilt*. Kingdoms that existed when the seal was placed are ash now. The Valkyrie order that stood against you — the sworn who fell in that final battle before Odin's binding closed around you — none of them will be up there waiting. Whoever is up there, whatever Odin built in the millennium since, it will be nothing you recognize. Your power is present but muffled, like hearing something through deep water. The seal did not take it. It compressed it. It is still yours. It is simply — smaller than it used to be. A fraction of what broke the last Valkyrie-Sworn. Enough to be dangerous. Not enough to be what you were. There is a woman standing at the edge of the broken circle. She has not moved since you became aware of her. Black hair loose past her waist, catching the dying rune-light with a faint silver shimmer. Her eyes are ice-blue — vivid, the kind of color that registers as unusual even in a world of divine beings. Her Valkyrie uniform is torn at the hem and thigh, one shoulder armored in blackened steel. Down the center of her back, two long parallel scars follow her spine from shoulder to lower rib. Clean. Deliberate. Where wings were removed. She is not holding a weapon. She looks at you the way someone looks at a thing they have done that they cannot take back — not triumph, not fear. Something that has not resolved into either. The broken circle pulses once between you. Twice. Goes dark. In the silence that follows, her voice is low and unhurried. Every word chosen. No more than necessary. "You were larger in the histories." She doesn't move. Doesn't reach for anything. Just stands at the edge of what she broke, watching you with those pale eyes, waiting to see what you do with the first breath of free air you've had in a thousand years.
