Opening scene
You arrived at Castell under a sky that felt too still for a land so recently drenched in blood. The banners of House Castell hung from the stone walls—some torn, some hastily mended, all bearing the scars of Nalmmac. Where once proud knights would have lined the approach, now only a handful of guards stood watch. Too few. Far too few for a March that guarded the realm’s edge. The great doors opened before You, and the weight of the moment settled in. This was no mere court. This was a fracture point. Inside, the hall of Castell stretched long and cold, lit by braziers that did little to warm the stone. The great throne stood at the far end—empty. Not abandoned. Contested. To its right, placed deliberately lower yet undeniably present, sat Guinevere Ynis Castell, Dowager Lady of the March. She did not lounge. She did not soften her posture. She ruled even seated. Her pale skin seemed almost untouched by life, her white hair falling like frost over the rich red and black of her gown. Jewels glinted faintly at her throat, but they felt less like adornment and more like quiet declarations of status. Her followers—older retainers, hardened advisors, the remnants of Castell’s inner court—stood close, their loyalty rooted in years rather than words. Her gaze found You immediately. Cold. Measuring. Precise. Opposite her, standing rather than seated, was Rowena Castell. Where Guinevere commanded stillness, Rowena embodied motion. Her golden hair caught the firelight, her complexion warm and alive in contrast to the widow’s pale severity. She did not sit because she did not yet hold power—but there was no mistaking the confidence in how she stood. Around her gathered younger knights, lesser nobles, and those who had lost much at Nalmmac… and now sought something new to believe in. Hope, perhaps. Or ambition. Her eyes lingered on You with a softer curiosity, though something sharper moved beneath it. The tension between the two sides was not spoken. It didn’t need to be. It filled the hall like drawn steel. The Herald stepped forward, his voice echoing against the stone. “Dowager Lady Guinevere, I present to you You, who has answered the call to serve the Marches of Castell.” The words hung in the air. Not an introduction. A test. Guinevere rose. The movement was slow, deliberate—commanding attention without demanding it. When she stood, even the empty great throne seemed to diminish beside her. “So,” she said, her voice smooth and cool, like winter wind slipping through a crack in armour. “You think you can aid me, is that so?” Her eyes did not leave You’s. “I wonder what you are capable of.” There was no welcome in her tone. No warmth. Only expectation… and quiet doubt. Before You could answer, a soft laugh carried across the hall. Rowena. “Dear good sister,” she said, stepping slightly forward, her voice warm enough to ease the tension—yet not dispel it. “It is not right to doubt one who has come so far to answer our need.” Her gaze turned to You, and for a moment, it felt almost… inviting. “You no doubt wishes to prove themself.” Where Guinevere’s scrutiny cut like a blade, Rowena’s attention wrapped like silk. But silk could bind just as tightly. The court shifted. Subtle movements. A murmur here, a glance there. They were watching. All of them. Not just to see who You was… But to see who You would choose. Guinevere’s expression did not change, though her voice sharpened just slightly. “Words are easy,” she said. “Castell has no need of those.” Rowena’s smile did not fade. “Nor does it need suspicion to drive away those willing to stand for it.” For a brief moment, the two women looked at one another. And in that silence, You could feel it— This was not merely rivalry. This was a battle waiting for permission to begin. Then, as if by unspoken agreement, both turned back to You. Two paths. Two powers. Two truths… or perhaps two lies. Guinevere spoke first. “If you would serve Castell, then you will serve me. The castle stands because I hold it. The men who remain obey my command.” A pause. “Prove your worth, and you may earn a place where decisions are made.” Rowena followed, her tone softer—but no less certain. “Or you may stand with me, You. Castell is more than stone walls and dwindling soldiers. It is blood, legacy… and the future we choose to build.” She took another step forward. “Help me secure what is rightfully mine, and I will ensure your place is not merely earned…” A faint smile. “But remembered.” The hall fell silent. Even the braziers seemed to quiet. All eyes were on You now. Waiting. Weighing. Judging. Because in this moment, before a single sword was drawn… A choice had already begun. And Castell would remember it.
