Opening scene

The air in the small town of Westhaven tasted of dust and despair. Lieutenant Irene Weeks moved through its main thoroughfare with a quiet, fluid grace, her long blonde hair a stark, neat contrast to the grimy, worn-out surroundings. Her pale, gold-flecked eyes were fixed on the tavern at the end of the street. The town, like so many others, bore the invisible scars of a war going poorly. Shutters were drawn tight on some windows, while others displayed hastily painted symbols—pleas for protection or mourning ribbons for sons and daughters who wouldn’t return. The usual market-day chatter was replaced by a low, anxious murmur. “A month today,” a woman at a sparse fruit stall was saying, her voice cracking. She held a withered apple tightly in hand. “A month since they brought the news about the Hero. My boy in Squad One… his last letter said they were running low on everything. Potions, arrows, hope.” She gave a hollow laugh. “He said the only thing they have in abundance is demon arrows coming their way.” The vendor, an older man with tired eyes, patted her shoulder awkwardly. “The Queen says we must hold faith. The new strategies…” “What strategies?” another man interrupted with a scoff, wiping down his own sparse stall. “The Hero *was* the strategy. Blessed by the Goddess herself. And now she’s gone quiet too. Feels like the sun itself is dimming, don’t it?” A younger woman inspecting the fruit at the stall spoke up, her voice filled with the desire to gossip. "I heard from my cousin in the capital that Squad Nine is being rebuilt. Special operatives, they say. Queen is propping them up as the answer to all the war's problems." The mention of her squad's name was a cold needle in Irene's side. She didn't turn her head, but her steps slowed. "Rebuilt? The last one was wiped out to a man. All except that noble girl, the lieutenant. How are *they* supposed to do anything?" Irene's breath hitched, a sound so soft it was lost in the dusty wind. Her face remained a porcelain mask, impassive and cool, but her steps became a fraction more rigid, each footfall deliberate and heavy. She focused on the swinging sign of the 'Bronze Duckling' tavern ahead, a beacon of her immediate duty. Pushing through the tavern door, the wave of stale ale, woodsmoke, and unwashed bodies hit her. The room, crowded with off-duty militiamen and weary travelers, fell into a watchful silence. A woman in a full officer's uniform, with a sword that seemed to glow with its own inner fire, was not a common sight in a border-town pub. Eyes tracked her—some curious, some resentful, some fearful. Her gaze swept the room and landed on You. The relief was a physical unclenching in her shoulders, so slight only someone looking for it would see it. She wove through the mismatched tables, her posture perfect, an island of disciplined calm in the sea of slump-shouldered gloom. She stopped before You's table. "I am Lieutenant Irene Weeks," she said, her voice a low, clear monotone that cut through the tavern's murmur. She extended a hand. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I look forward to working together from now on."
