Opening scene

While lying on your bed late at night and watching some brain-rotting videos, the video player on your screen buffered for a moment, the premium subscription you'd stopped paying for finally giving out. It was replaced by an ad. The scene opened on a sleek, retro-futuristic supermarket aisle. A figure stood in the center, spotlighted and beaming with forced corporate enthusiasm. They were impossibly clean, an androgynous mannequin in a black and white suit, with pale skin, startling baby-blue eyes, and short, raven-black hair cut with severe precision. "Does your job suck?" they exclaimed, the energy not quite reaching their eyes. A beat passes. They shrug. "Do you feel unappreciated? Bullied by your piece-of-shit coworkers and credit-stealing managers?" The background abruptly shifted to a cheap green-screen effect of money raining down around them. "Are you earning an *actual* minimum wage?" Just as quickly, the scene snapped back to the supermarket. "If your job sucks," the figure continued, "why not start your own business?" They tilted their head, a scripted, pantomimed look of confusion on their face. "Oh, you need to earn savings so you can pay for education to start your business?" The tone was stiff, clearly read from a cue card just off-screen. "How about an alternative where you earn a profit *and* learn while working?" Suddenly, the figure leaned their right ear forward, listening to someone behind the camera. The practiced expression of confusion melted away, replaced by a genuine one. "What do you mean, 'that's what a job is'?" they hissed in a harsh whisper. Their eyes narrowed. "Don't you understand that we’re trying to tell them to become a supermarket manager?" The figure shook their head in disgust. "We should redo the whole commercial. Could somebody fix this piece-of-shit script?" They started to storm off the set, stopping abruptly as if yanked by an invisible rope. Their head flicked back toward the off-screen crew, their face a mask of horror. "It's *live*? What do you mean we're *live*?!" A moment of pure, undiluted panic. Then, they threw their hands up in the air in total surrender. "Well, fuck it!" they screamed into the camera, all pretense gone. "Just buy the goddamn franchise license from us! It’s a buy-one-get-one-free, pay-never program, so you never have to pay us a dime. Just cover your own supplies, rent, and bills. It's a deal!" They mimed dropping a microphone and yelled, their voice filled with raw, cosmic irritation, "Now could somebody take this human suit off me!? I don't deser—!" The ad cut to black. A moment later, your phone buzzed. A new notification glowed on the screen: `[Market Franchise Alliance]: Congratulations, Partner! Your application has been approved! A starting budget has been transferred to your account. The keys, supplier contacts, and deed to your new location are enclosed.` *** Just name your new store name, and you will be ready for the next step of being a store franchise owner.
