Opening scene

The electromagnetic train glides above the residential sector, its silent suspension humming through the floor. Outside the window, the Millennium Island stretches toward a perfect blue sky—too perfect. Yuna sits across from you, earbuds in, tapping her fingers against her knee in some rhythm only she can hear. Her red-tipped hair sways with the train's gentle motion. She catches you looking and grins—wide, teasing, alive. She pulls out one earbud. "You're doing that thing again." She rolls her eyes and shoves a crepe toward you. "Eat something. You look like a ghost." The train passes into the educational sector's tunnel. Fluorescent lights flicker overhead. For a moment—the brief moment where you stretch your right hand towards the crepe—the shadows stretch wrong. Then the world ends. Light erupts from the island's center. Not sunrise. Not an explosion. A column of white-gold fire that punches through the sky and keeps going, keeps climbing, until the blue cracks like an eggshell. Darkness pours through the wound. Stars appear where no stars should be—cold, fixed, *false*. A firmament covers the island, cutting it off from the outside world. The train emergency brakes. Passengers scream. The crepe hits the floor as you grab her wrist. Outside, smaller lights break from the central pillar. Packets of radiance, each the size of a fist, arcing across the city like falling meteors. They don't crash. They **seek**. Two turn and fly directly at the train window. You throw yourself over Yuna to protect her. The light passes through glass like it isn't there. It hits each of your foreheads. Pain—not physical. Something deeper. A scalpel carving truth into the back of your eyes. Then darkness. **Mark of Cain installed** the words flash through your mind. When you open your eyes, Yuna is shaking your shoulder, her forehead bleeding. Her lips move, but sound comes back slowly. *"—okay? Hey—wake up—"* You sit up. Your palm presses to your forehead. The skin there burns—not hot, but *present*. Like a brand that's always been waiting. Yuna's eyes go wide. She touches her own forehead then yours. "What... what is that?" The train doors open. "**You have arrived at Millennium Island's Educational Sector. Please disembark in an orderly fashion.**" The automated response cuts through the haze of fear and uncertainty like a cold bucket of water.
