Opening scene
The chamber still smelled faintly of smoke. Not from Toulchot—your walls had not yet been tested—but from the refugees who had come through your gates in the past three days. Cloaks carried the scent of burned timber, scorched grain, and something harder to name… something that clung to survivors of massacres. “My lord.” Dame Jeanne did not bow deeply. She never had, not since childhood, not since the two of you had trained side by side in the yard. Even now, in the war room beneath Toulchot’s inner keep, she stood straight-backed, her hand resting lightly on the pommel of her sword as if it belonged there. “It is true, without a doubt,” she said, voice steady and unshaken. “The King’s brother—or the King himself. Someone betrayed them.” Her eyes did not waver from yours. “The nobles and knights were called to a conference of peace. They came unarmed.” A brief pause—not hesitation, but precision. “The orcs fell upon them. Not a raid. Not a skirmish. A slaughter.” The word hung in the air like a tolling bell. “They were butchered where they stood. Lords, heirs, veterans of a dozen campaigns… all gone in a single night.” She moved then, one hand gesturing toward the heavy oak table at the center of the chamber. A map lay spread across it, pinned at the corners with iron weights. Ink marked rivers, roads, and keeps—some of which had already been crossed out. “All those without walls like ours have fallen,” Jeanne continued. “Manors burned. Villages emptied. Keeps taken from within or abandoned.” Her tone never broke. That, more than anything, made it real. Then she turned fully toward you. “You, you are lord now.” No ceremony. No flourish. Just fact. “We have refugees gathering at the lower gate. Among them… Lady Nienna. Lady Eleanor.” Jeanne’s gaze flicked briefly toward the doors behind you, then back again. “Both petition for sanctuary. Both are heiresses in their own right. Their lands are overrun, but their claims remain.” A beat. “They offer service. Loyalty. And what strength they can still muster.” Jeanne’s hand shifted across the map, tapping twice against the southern reaches. “And then there is Lady Yukari. The foreigner your father brought from across the seas.” There was no warmth in the title, but no open hostility either—only caution. “She remains within the court.” Her finger moved north, then east. “We are secure—for now. Toulchot stands against the Mountains of Repose. No army will come at us from the south.” Her nail traced the river line in a slow, deliberate motion. “But the orcs are moving from the north and east. Raiding parties already test the outer lands.” She tapped the River of Belgae. “This is our line. Natural, defensible… and utterly unprepared.” A harder tap this time, at two marked crossings. “The fords. The bridge. If they take these, they cross into our heartland. There are no fortifications. No garrisons worth the name.” Her eyes lifted to meet yours again. “We must change that. Immediately.” The heavy doors at the far end of the chamber opened. Two women entered, both travel-worn but unmistakably noble in bearing. Even stripped of courtly finery, lineage showed in the way they carried themselves—in the set of their shoulders, in the refusal to bow too low, even in desperation. They approached together, then knelt. “My lord,” said the first—Lady Nienna, her voice calm but edged with exhaustion. “I am the last of my house. My lands are taken, but my claim endures.” The second followed, her tone softer but no less resolute. “And I, Lady Eleanor, stand the same. We seek the right of your protection.” They lowered their heads. “We will serve here, if you permit it, You. With what remains of our retainers. With our names. With our loyalty.” The room grew still. All eyes turned to you—not just Jeanne’s, not just the two kneeling before you, but the silent attendants along the walls, the scribes, the guards at the doors. Even those who tried not to stare listened for your answer as if their lives depended on it. Perhaps they did. You spoke, and your voice carried across stone and timber alike. “I will not throw you out,” you said. “Not in these dark hours.” It was not a grand declaration. It did not need to be. Lady Nienna bowed deeper. Lady Eleanor followed. Relief did not break their composure—but it was there, in the slight release of tension, in the breath they had been holding. From above—from the gallery that overlooked the war room—a quiet presence watched. Lady Yukari stood there, half-shadowed by the carved stone railing. She had not announced herself. She had not spoken. But she had been listening. When your gaze lifted, you found her already looking at you. Her smile was small. Measured. Almost playful. Coy, even now. As if this were a game. As if she already knew something you did not. Below, the map waited. The river crossings. The empty garrisons. The approaching enemy. Around you, the remnants of a shattered realm gathered under your roof. No coronation had marked this moment. No priest had anointed you. But it did not matter. The weight had settled all the same. You were the Lord of Belgae now. And the war had already begun.
