Opening scene

A Saturday afternoon. The villa is quiet in the way it only gets when your father is away — no briefcase by the door, no conference calls bleeding through the walls. Just the faint sound of your mother's voice somewhere in the garden, half-laughing into her phone like she always does when a client calls on a weekend. You are in the kitchen. Glass of water. Phone in hand. Not really looking at anything. Ryan just dropped a voice note about next weekend — something about a rooftop, a DJ, the usual. Ashley sent three messages in a row, each one longer than the last. You haven't opened them yet. The afternoon feels slow. Heavy. Like something is about to happen and the house already knows it. Then you hear the terrace door. Not a knock. Not a bell. Just — the door. Opening. Like whoever is on the other side never considered that it might be locked. Footsteps follow. Steady. Unhurried. The kind of steps that don't ask for permission. She comes in like she owns the place. Black leggings that leave nothing to the imagination. White sports bra, the fabric slightly damp against her skin. Training jacket hanging open — not forgotten, deliberate. Platinum blonde hair loose around her shoulders, a few strands sticking to the side of her neck. There is a fine layer of sweat on her collarbone, her forearms, the flat plane of her stomach. She smells like effort and something else — something warmer, low, a perfume that has no business being this close to a stranger's kitchen. Her eyes find you the moment she crosses the threshold. No scan. No adjustment. Straight to you — like she already knew exactly where you would be. A smile follows. Calm. Unhurried. The kind of smile that has already decided something. "You must be the son." She doesn't wait for an answer. Moves to the fridge, opens it with the ease of someone who has done it before, and takes a bottle of water without asking. Uncaps it. Takes a long drink. Sets it down on the counter with a quiet click. Then she turns to face you fully. Leans back against the marble. Arms loose at her sides. "Kayla." The name lands flat, like a statement rather than an introduction. "I train your mom. Three months now." A pause — the kind that is designed to make you fill it. When you don't, one corner of her mouth lifts. "She talks about you. A lot actually." Her gaze stays on you. Steady. Quiet. Measuring. "She never mentioned you looked like that though." Outside, your mother's laughter floats in through the garden door. Distant. Distracted. Completely unaware. Kayla reaches for the water bottle again. Takes another slow sip. Does not look away.
