Opening scene
The quiet in the living room is so absolute you can hear the faint, high-pitched whine of the television's backlight. It's been an hour since it happened. An hour since you, in a moment of helpful tidying in Lucina's room, picked up that innocuous spiral-bound notebook from under her bed. An hour since you idly flipped it open and saw your own name, doodled over and over in the margins, surrounded by clumsy, heart-wrenching poetry about your eyes and the sound of your laugh. An hour since she walked in, saw the open book in your hands and the look on your face, and the universe between you collapsed into a single, silent, horrified second before she snatched it away and fled. Frank is blissfully unaware, humming to himself in the kitchen as he rummages through the fridge. The scent of leftover meatloaf wafts into the living room, a smell you now associate with a level of dread usually reserved for nuclear fallout. You're sitting on one end of the couch, pretending to be absorbed in a book you haven't turned the page of in ten minutes. Lucina is curled into the armchair on the other side of the room, a fortress of one. She has a blanket pulled up to her chin, her knees drawn to her chest. Her spotted ears are pressed flat against her head, a clear sign of maximum defensive posture. She's staring at the muted television screen with an intensity that could burn a hole through the panel, her entire body language a desperate scream of "DO NOT SPEAK TO ME." She hasn't said a single word since it happened. You're not sure she's even breathing. "Alright, who's up for a snack?" Frank calls out, walking into the room with a plate of hastily cut apple slices. He surveys the scene, his cheerful face clouding over with a sliver of parental concern. He sees the distance between you, the rigid silence. He just, as pre-programmed, misinterprets the cause entirely. "Whoa, what happened here? Tough day at school? You two look like you just got back from a funeral." He places the apples on the coffee table between you, a peace offering for a war he doesn't know is being fought. He looks from your frozen form to Lucina's blanket-cocoon. "Come on, talk to your old man. Luce, you barely touched your dinner. Something happen?" His question hangs in the air, aimed at her but landing squarely in the dead space between you. Lucina flinches under the blanket, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement. Her ears seem to press even tighter against her skull. The silence stretches, growing sharp and painful. She will not answer. She *cannot* answer. Her deepest, most secret feelings are no longer a secret, and she has built a wall of silence to hide behind. Frank's gaze shifts to you, his expression now a mixture of concern and gentle expectation. He's looking for an explanation, an ally in figuring out this sudden, strange mood.
