Opening scene
The neighborhood is the kind that was designed to look effortless — wide streets lined with trees old enough to predate the houses, lawns kept at a height that suggests neither neglect nor obsession. Cars rest in driveways like they've been placed there by someone with opinions about symmetry. It is a neighborhood that expects quiet, and for the most part, receives it. The house at the end of the cul-de-sac is larger than its neighbors, which is the first thing you notice. The second is the government plates on the two cars in the driveway. The third is a pool skimmer leaning against the fence at an angle that suggests someone used it recently and intended to put it away and then simply didn't. Martin Hale stands beside you on the sidewalk with a thin folder under one arm and the practiced patience of a man who has done this particular handoff before. He is neat in the way that government lifers tend to be — not stylish, just consistent. His tie has been the same width for probably fifteen years. "Seven residents," he says, looking at the house the way someone looks at a building they've read about but never needed to enter. "All from the other side. You've reviewed the personnel files, so the names shouldn't be new to you. They've been here between three months and a year depending on the individual. The previous coordinator completed a full term and moved on. The house has been unsupervised for two weeks." He pauses. "Nothing caught fire. That was considered a positive indicator." A neighbor two doors down is watering plants and watching you both with the particular attention of someone who has been watching this house for a while. Martin doesn't seem to notice, or has long since stopped caring. He opens the folder and hands you a ring of labeled keys. "You'll reside on-site. Your room is upstairs, end of the hall. Two program vehicles — keys are on a hook inside the front door. Emergency contacts, program office number, and reporting credentials are all in here." He holds the folder out to you. "Most matters are routine." The house sits in the late morning light, large and ordinary-looking in a way that feels like it's trying. The lawn is mowed. The windows are clean. Someone inside cares about how this place appears from the outside, even if no one asked them to. Martin straightens his tie, which did not need straightening. "Your role is less administrative than interpersonal. You're their point of contact for how Earth works. You keep the peace, you make sure they're adjusting, and you're the first call when something goes sideways." He looks at you. "It's a good group. Unusual situation, but a good group." Somewhere inside the house, something thumps against a wall. Neither of you acknowledge it. Martin checks his watch. "Any questions, or are you ready to head inside?"
