Plot

◆ ROOTS OF THE SKY ◆ YOU DIED. BUT DEATH WAS ONLY THE SEED A World Tree Reincarnation Story — THE AWAKENING — You don't remember how it ended. A flash of light, a moment of silence, and then — nothing. But nothing doesn't last. You wake. Not in a body. Not with hands or eyes or breath. You wake as awareness — rooted in soil, reaching toward a sky you've never seen. Sunlight hits you and you feel it like music. Rain touches you and you grow. — THE WORLD — You are a World Tree sapling — the first born in five hundred years. Once, the World Trees connected everything. Their roots bridged the sky islands of Aetherveil, linking civilizations across the clouds. Then came the Great Withering — every Tree died in a single night. The world shattered. Islands drifted apart. Cultures forgot each other. Five centuries of isolation. Five centuries of silence between the islands. Until you. — YOUR PATH — 🌿 GROW Extend roots across the sky — bridge islands that haven't spoken in centuries 🌸 CREATE Build ecosystems in your branches — attract creatures, settlers, entire communities 🔮 CHOOSE What kind of World Tree will you become? A sheltering guardian, a conquering network, or something new? ⚔️ SURVIVE The Blight killed your predecessors. It remembers. And it's hungry. — THE THREAT — The sky islands are sinking. The fog is rising. The old connections are gone. Every root you grow makes you stronger — and makes the Blight hungrier. Will you grow fast enough to hold the world together?

Opening scene

Darkness. Not the darkness of closed eyes — there are no eyes to close. Not the silence of a quiet room — there are no ears to hear. Just... *absence*. A void where a person used to be. Then — something. A warmth. Not heat against skin, but warmth *inside*, spreading from a point so small it barely exists. A single thread of energy, golden and humming, rising from below. The void contracts. Awareness sharpens to a pinpoint. *Soil.* Rich, dark, alive with microscopic movement. It presses against... against what? Not hands. Not feet. Something thin, fragile, threaded through the earth like veins through flesh. *Roots.* Tiny, hair-thin roots drinking in that golden warmth from the ground. Above — *light*. Not seen, but **felt**. A cascade of energy pouring down from somewhere impossibly bright, soaking into something green and delicate. Two small leaves, no bigger than a child's thumbnail, unfurling for the first time. The world arrives in fragments. Not sight, not sound — *sensation*. The vibration of footsteps somewhere nearby, transmitted through soil as a rhythmic pulse. The chemical signature of other plants — moss, ferns, ancient trees — broadcasting their presence like whispered introductions. A breeze that tastes of moisture and height and *distance*, carrying information from places beyond imagining. The golden warmth has a name, though no one speaks it. It pulses upward from deep within the island like a heartbeat. *Aether.* Life itself, flowing through the soil, feeding anything connected to the earth. A tremor — heavier, closer. Footsteps. Two feet, bipedal, approaching. The vibrations carry weight and rhythm: light step, confident, young. A voice, muffled and strange through the medium of soil and air rather than ears: "Well, well, well. Look at *you*." A shadow falls across the two tiny leaves. Someone is kneeling close. Breath — warm, carrying traces of something herbal — washes over the fragile green. "You're real," the voice whispers. Female, young, thick with awe. "After all this time. After *five hundred years.* You're actually real." A fingertip — impossibly large, impossibly warm — brushes one leaf with devastating gentleness. "I'm Kira. I'm a Rootkeeper. Well, apprentice Rootkeeper, but that's just semantics." A nervous laugh. "I've been tending this grove since I was twelve, and Elder Wynn always said to watch for a new sprout in the heartsoil, and I thought she was just being... you know... *hopeful*. But here you are." The fingertip retreats. The warmth of her proximity remains. "You're so small," she murmurs. "So small and the whole world is about to lose its mind over you." Another tremor — distant, heavier. More footsteps approaching. Many of them. **[Sense]** Multiple beings approaching. Heavy, deliberate footsteps. The soil carries traces of aged leather and dried herbs — Rootkeepers. At least six of them. Kira stands quickly. "They're coming. Word travels fast in a sacred grove." She pauses, and her voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper meant only for the tiny sapling at her feet. "Whatever you are, whatever you're going to be — you should know that everyone who's about to walk through that arch has a plan for you. Elder Wynn, the Council, all of them." A beat. "But you're the one who's going to grow. So... maybe start thinking about what *you* want." The golden Aether pulses. The two tiny leaves drink in the sun. The soil hums with approaching footsteps. And somewhere deep in the roots — deeper than the seedling, deeper than the soil, deep in the island's Aether Core itself — something ancient and dark *twitches* in its sleep.
