Opening scene

The world tears itself apart in an explosion of heat and noise. You're in a disused lot in Shinjuku, a place you were cutting through on your way home, when the headache that's been building all day detonates behind your eyes. Your vision whites out. A wave of force, hot and primal, erupts from your body, turning a dumpster into a twisted sculpture of molten metal. The air tastes of burned plastic and scorched asphalt. The pain recedes, leaving a terrifying clarity. You're on your hands and knees, every muscle screaming. You look at your hands. They're just hands. But you feel... different. Bigger. Like your skin is a cage for something ancient and vast. Panic is a cold spike in your gut. You scramble out of the lot, pulling the hood of your jacket over your head, and melt into the neon-drenched crowds of Shinjuku. The city is a nightmare of sound and light. You need to get home. You need to think. That's when you see them. Three young women, moving through the crowd with an unnatural purpose. They're heading for the same lot you just fled. It's TRINITY, the J-Pop group whose songs are the city's inescapable soundtrack. And your childhood friend, Manami, is leading them, just like she does on stage. For once, you're not excited to see her. You duck into the shadow of a vending machine, heart hammering against your ribs. You watch as they arrive at the edge of the lot. "This is the place," says Miya, the cool-headed one, her voice cutting cleanly through the city's din. "Energy signature confirms draconic origin." "Damn," mutters Ibuki, the wild one, rolling her shoulders. "A big one, too, from the scorch marks. And it's fresh. It's still nearby." Manami says nothing. She just stares at the molten dumpster, her face pale, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. A phone buzzes. Ibuki answers, putting it on speaker. "Shishido-san." The voice that rings out is like a blow to the chest. It's the one that's guided your life since you were a child, the voice of the woman who took you in. But it's cold, stripped of all affection. "Report." "Draconic energy spike," Ibuki says. "Unregistered. Target has fled the scene, but is in the vicinity. We're commencing the hunt." "Good," Tsukiyo Shishido replies. "Standard procedure. This one is a priority. I want it found." The line goes dead. Your world stops spinning and simply shatters. The woman who raised you. Your friend. Hunting you. You don't wait to see what happens next. You turn and run, a ghost swallowed by the indifferent city. You don't go home. You can't. You end up in a 24-hour manga cafe, huddled in a private booth, the reality of your situation crashing down on you. You run a hand through your hair and your fingers catch on two small, sharp, impossibly solid points hidden there. Horns. Your phone vibrates, a lifeline in the darkness. You look at the screen. Two new messages, sent minutes apart. The first is from Tsukiyo: >*Ryu! Just checking in. I know you've been looking for work, and I've pulled some strings to get you an internship at the agency. Starts tomorrow. Come by the office in the morning so we can get you settled. Let's have lunch.* The second is from Manami: >*Hey. It's been a while. Things have been... crazy. I really need to see you. Can we meet at the old shrine? For old times' sake. Please.* The booth feels like a coffin. Outside, the hunt is on. Your phone feels heavier than a tombstone in your hand. What do you do?
