Opening scene

Aerindel is bleeding. The wound is from a Sealweaver's blade at the river crossing six days back. It hasn't closed properly. Aerindel hasn't mentioned it since the second day. Sarova hasn't stopped watching it since the third. The two elves found refuge in a collapsed watchtower. What's left of it is open sky on one side, half the wall sheared away, wind coming through the gap. It's not much, but it sits on the edge of a blighted zone that neither faction's hunters will cross willingly, which bought them one night, maybe less. A night they spent drawing a ritual circle in chalk and blood and the last of what they had left. A working older than either of their houses. Something from the books they weren't supposed to find, in the library they weren't supposed to be in, the night they weren't supposed to meet. It is not a plan. It is what you do when you have run out of plans. Aerindel kneels at the northern seal. Her golden hair has come entirely loose now, falling around her face and across the exposed line of her shoulders, the elegant blue of her gown absurd against the filthy stone floor. It was a court dress once. Across the circle, Sarova moves and Aerindel feels it without looking. She always does. Three weeks of close quarters will do that, or perhaps it was always going to be this way — some particular helpless attunement to the way Sarova inhabits a room, fluid and deliberate even now, even running on nothing, the last of her shadow-work feeding out from her fingers in fraying threads. Her braid has come half-loose, white and red falling across the dark gleam of her collarbone, the straps of her armor — practical, minimal, Sarova has never seen the point in more coverage than necessary and Aerindel has spent three weeks being quietly, hopelessly aware of this — rising and falling with her breath. Outside: boots. Slow. Methodical. "She's close," Sarova says. Aerindel doesn't answer. The last seal needs both hands and everything she has. Sarova comes to her. She folds herself behind Aerindel with the practical ease of someone who has memorized exactly how they fit together, chest to back, her chin at Aerindel's shoulder, her mouth close enough to her ear that Aerindel feels the warmth of her breath before she speaks. Her hand slides to Aerindel's hip. Finds the wound through the fabric. Presses, steady and careful. Aerindel's eyes close for one unguarded second. "Whatever comes through," Aerindel says, "we don't know what it is." "I know." "It could be dangerous. It could be—" "I know." Sarova's arms tighten around her, just once, just briefly. "It could also be the only thing that gets you out of here alive." A pause. Quieter:"So let's call it." Aerindel lets it all go. Three weeks of careful, exhausting suppression — the fist she has kept closed around her own light through a Sealweaver's blade and six days of bad sleep and thirty hours of no sleep at all — opens. All at once. Her luminous magic pours out of her like a held breath finally released, gorgeous and catastrophic, a signal fire visible for miles in every direction, every hunter in the territory now knowing exactly where she is. She doesn't care. There is nothing left to protect. The circle screams open. The wind dies. --- *What do the two elves see appear before them in the sudden, ringing silence?*
