Plot
ATHERBOUND CHRONICLES The World Is Yours Log in or lose everything. The rest is up to you. OPEN WORLD ▮ DUNGEON MIND ▮ PLAYER-DRIVEN NARRATIVE Aetherfall Online is not a game anymore. It is the last viable income source for millions — and you are one of them. Seventeen dollars. Four days. One headset. Hearthstead is where everyone starts. Where you go from there is entirely your own. A WORLD THREE YEARS DEEP Five discovered zones from starter slums to unmapped wilderness Two server wars already fought — their consequences still running Six major guilds control the economy, quests, and social order Undiscovered zones might exist — whoever gets there first owns the early economy EVERY PATH IS REAL Combat mercenary, master craftsperson, merchant empire, political operator, covert assassin No fixed progression — skills develop through use, reputation through action Guild alliance, independence, or something the established powers haven't accounted for yet THE STAKES ARE NOT VIRTUAL In-game gold converts directly to real-world income Rent, utilities, and food bills accrue on a real clock that does not pause for dungeon timers Reputation damage follows you across every zone and every transaction There is no safety net — there never was CORE MECHANIC Real World Clock Day 1 / Ongoing Real-world time passes at a 3:1 ratio to in-game time. Three in-game hours equal one real-world hour. Sustainable income required — or consequences follow. PRIMARY THREAT The Established Order Three years of calcified hierarchy — guilds, contracts, and social architecture all built before you arrived. TACTICS Contract board manipulation, reputation pressure, economic gatekeeping, and covert operations nobody will officially acknowledge. The Verdant Compact — controls every new player's first economic choices Nullpoint — the guild that doesn't exist, whose clients always deny they were hired THE POWER STRUCTURE IRONVEIL COMBAT GUILD Controls the Sunken Vaults. Military discipline. They never lose a planned engagement and never forgive a betrayal. THE SUNKEN CROWN COMBAT GUILD Ironveil's mirror and nemesis. Individual excellence over institutional safety. The Greywood is still contested between them. THE VERDANT COMPACT HEARTHSTEAD CONTROL The first faction every new player encounters. They control the starter economy because they understood early that controlling the pipeline beats competing at the top. AURUM WORKS MERCHANT GUILD They don't fight. They make every other guild's economy run and take a percentage of everything that moves through it. THE ASHEN THREAD CRAFTER GUILD They care about what you can make, not who you know. The only guild that recruits on merit regardless of reputation tier. NULLPOINT COVERT OPERATIONS No public roster. No acknowledged contracts. Every major guild has used them at least once. None will confirm it. GUILD REPRESENTATIVES The faces you will meet first. None of them are waiting for you. Cipher AURUM WORKS — MARKET FACTOR She is watching your economic behavior the way a researcher watches data. Precise. Transactional. Completely unsentimental. Every transaction you run through the auction house feeds her market picture. Bracket VERDANT COMPACT — CONTRACT BOARD Not cruel — practical. Everything framed as helpfulness. “Just a heads up” means a warning. “Might want to consider” means a threat. He never raises his voice because he has never needed to. Sable IRONVEIL — RECRUITMENT ASSESSOR She will not engage directly unless you cross a performance threshold that makes the conversation worth having. Indifference is not hostility — it is the accurate reflection of where you currently sit in her eyes. Ravel SUNKEN CROWN — VETERAN PLAYER He moves through Hearthstead with the ease of someone who has nothing to prove here. Genuinely interested in interesting people. He asks questions like they're casual and listens to answers like they're data. Hammertime ASHEN THREAD — MASTER CRAFTSPERSON Your balance, guild status, and reputation are irrelevant to him. What you can make — or demonstrate genuine interest in learning — is the only currency he trades in. Most new players walk past his stall without stopping. Even NULLPOINT — UNREMARKABLE VENDOR Reasonable prices. Adequate stock. Nothing memorable. Eight months in Hearthstead and everyone loves her. THIS STORY IS BUILT AROUND DM USE This Story has been created to make use of the DM function, during testing all AIs I tested handled the DM properly, though sometimes if you find it calls the DM for mundane stuff too often, use an OOC prompt to remind that it shouldn't always call DM. Tracked Stats: HP/MP STR - DEX - CON - INT - WIS - CHA XP - Player level - Gold This Story plays out in two worlds online and offline, the state is tracked by the DM and clear indication you want to log-on/off is required by your input to trigger disconnect or reconnect. When in the real world the DM is inactive, only when you are connected to the game will the DM be called upon. ATHERBOUND CHRONICLES A Code_mind special The world existed before you arrived. It will continue when you log out. What happens in between is yours.
Opening scene
The left strap is held together with electrical tape. You noticed the crack three days ago when you pulled the headset out of the secondhand box, ran your thumb along the fracture, decided it would hold. It has held. You are wearing it now, sitting on the edge of your mattress, and the calibration sequence is counting down in the corner of your vision. 3. 2. 1. The room disappears. >AETHERFALL ONLINE >FULL-DIVE SEQUENCE COMPLETE >WELCOME TO HEARTHSTEAD — STARTER ZONE You are standing in a stone corridor. Torchlight. The haptic suit renders warmth on your left side where the nearest flame sits in its bracket, cold air moving from somewhere ahead. The corridor is empty. A door at the far end — iron-banded wood, slightly ajar. An interface panel materializes in your vision. Translucent. Persistent. >PLAYER PROFILE INITIALIZED >NAME: You >CURRENT BALANCE: 0G >REAL WORLD CONVERSION RATE: 1G = $0.47 USD A second panel opens beneath it. >AETHERFALL ECONOMY NOTICE: This game operates on a self-contained player economy. No subscription fees. No premium purchases. Income is earned exclusively through in-game activity and converts directly to real-world currency at the current market rate. You earn nothing by logging in. You earn everything by working. The panel holds. Doesn’t rush. >DEATH PENALTY NOTICE: In-game death carries the following consequences — -- 50 GOLD FINE, debited immediately upon respawn. Minimum account balance is zero. The fine cannot push you below it. -- CURRENT LEVEL XP RESET TO ZERO -- 24 HOUR ACCOUNT LOCKOUT Upon respawn you will wake at the nearest safe zone to your location. Your gear travels with you. Your progress does not. Another pause. The torchlight moves. These penalties are permanent and non-negotiable. No exceptions are made for new players. No exceptions are made for any players. The panels close. One remains. >TUTORIAL OBJECTIVE: >PROCEED TO THE HEARTHSTEAD CONTRACT BOARD >ACCEPT YOUR FIRST CONTRACT >COMPLETE IT >↑ NORTH EXIT — 200 METERS The iron-banded door swings open on its own. Beyond it — cobblestone, noise, forge smoke, the compressed energy of a city that has been running without you for three years and has no particular interest in your arrival. The contract board is two hundred meters north. Your balance is zero. The door is open.
