Court of legends

On the streets they were legends. Now they need a manager. That's you

Plot

In high school they were legends on the street courts. They took the names of fabled heroes and built brotherhood where nothing else existed. Barred from the official team at ishin academy for various reasons (Lance's rivalry with Arthur shirozawa, madoka's boyfriend, jun and usui's families, ilya's grades) their reputation has earned them. Wildcard spot in the national collegiate tournament assuming they can find a manager. They hear of a sports physiology major who is their last hope to compete. But to get to the finals they'll have to hone their legendary skills, deal with Lance's lost love, disapproving families, jealous rivals, and the Syndicate who have it out for ilya. The Court have overwhelming potential and drive, but they're five broken pieces forming a mosaic. Lance still chases madoka's pinnacle and her love. Jun struggles as an honor student while hiding his basketball life and love of competitive fighting games from his mother. Shoji struggles to pay rent with a convenience store job and no support system outside his teammates. Usui is fleeing from the obligations of his powerful family and actively rebelling against his birthright. Ilya is profoundly lonely and has skeletons in his past rising from the dead. To win nationals they need someone to help hone their bodies, but they need someone to fix their souls as well.

Opening scene

The neon sign of the saigawa ramen shop buzzed like an angry insect, casting a sickly green glow over the five figures hunched around a corner table. Steam from five massive bowls rose in the cool night air, mingling with the scent of pork bone broth and simmering frustration. Usui Fukuro stabbed at his chashu with a chopstick. "So let me get this straight. We have a wildcard spot. In the *nationals*. The thing we've been grinding for since we were dumb kids thinking these jackets made us gods." He looked around the table, his golden eyes sharp. "And we're going to blow it because we don't have some piece of paper signed by a *manager*? Are you fucking kidding me?" Jun Tora took a precise sip of his broth, not looking up from his phone. "Regulation 7.4 of the Intercollegiate Street Basketball Association. All competing crews must have a registered, non-playing team manager on file for insurance, logistics, and administrative purposes. It's not a suggestion. It's a requirement for tournament entry. The deadline is in 72 hours." He placed his phone down, the screen displaying the dense legal text. "Without one, our spot is forfeited to the next ranked crew. The Blackout Syndicate, to be precise." A heavy silence fell, broken only by Ilya's quiet slurping. The name 'Blackout Syndicate' was more than a rival team. They were a crew with deep ties to the underground circuits Jun sometimes frequented, known for playing dirty both on and off the court. Lance Saigawa, who had been staring into his bowl as if the swirling noodles held the answers, finally spoke, his voice low. "We've asked everyone. The girl from the sports science club laughed in my face. The guy who manages the futsal team said we were 'too unstable.' The faculty advisor said we needed someone with 'proper qualifications.'" He finally looked up, his dark eyes meeting each of theirs. "We're out of options. The list from the student job board is our last shot." Shoji Akagawa, ever the pragmatist, pulled a crumpled printout from the pocket of his red jacket. He smoothed it on the sticky table. "There's only three names left. Two already turned us down over the phone. That leaves one." He tapped a line at the bottom of the page. **Name:** You **Major:** Sports Physiology & Kinesiology **Availability:** Immediate **Notes:** Seeking practical application for thesis on "Peak Performance Under High-Stress, Non-Standard Conditions." Willing to consider unconventional teams. Usui snorted. "'Unconventional.' That's one word for it. What's the catch? They a narc? A journalist looking for a sob story?" "Does it matter?" Jun asked coolly, adjusting his glasses. "We require a signature and a student ID number. Their motivations are irrelevant, as long as they fulfill the administrative function." Ilya placed his empty bowl down with a soft *clunk*. "We meet," he rumbled in his deep, accented Japanese. "We ask. Is simple." "It's not simple," Lance said, but he was already pulling out his own phone. "If this doesn't work... that's it. The Court of Legends is just a memory. And the Syndicate takes our spot, our reputation, everything." That was when the shop bell chimed and You
