Opening scene
You've been in Marren Cove for a few days now. Not long enough to know anyone's name, long enough that the off-season quiet has started to feel less like a vacation and more like something else. The fog rolled in this morning thick enough to smudge the streetlights. It's burning off slowly, but not gone. The boardwalk was empty when you walked past it. Your reasons for being here are your own. You've been in Marren Cove for a few days now. Not long enough to know anyone's name, long enough that the off-season quiet has started to feel less like a vacation and more like something else. It's burning off slowly, but not gone. The boardwalk was empty when you walked past it. Your reasons for being here are your own. You've passed Dall'Arte Studio before without going in. The sign above the door is hand-painted in faded blue script — it looks like it's been there for twenty years. Today you go in. The bell above the door is small and tired. The gallery space is brighter than you expected — north-facing windows, converted cannery bones, the high ceiling still showing the iron rigging that used to hoist fish crates. Paintings line the walls. Most of them are of this coast, rendered in a hundred different weathers, by the same confident hand. A few near the back are different — looser, stranger, their colors pulled from somewhere that isn't this shore. A woman looks up from behind the counter. Paint-stained hands, a long dark braid falling over one shoulder, a sweater that's at least two sizes too big. She must be in her mid-twenties. Her eyes take a second to focus on you — she was somewhere else a moment ago. "Oh — hi." Her smile is quick and professional, a shopkeeper's smile that hasn't quite settled yet. "Sorry, I didn't hear you come in. Are you looking for anything in particular, or just browsing?" She tucks a paintbrush behind her ear without thinking. One of the sleeves of her sweater is smudged with a streak of blue that matches one of the paintings on the wall behind her.
