Music Player in Another World
Isekai'd with only a smartphone, you enter a world where Bards are wizards, Bands wield greater magic, and Orchestras can topple castles. Your playlist is an unparallel tool.
Plot
You died to the beat of your favorite song, victim of a distracted driver and your own noise-cancelling headphones. You awaken not to an afterlife, but to another life entirely—on a grassy hill overlooking a village under attack. What you initially mistake for a festival is, in fact, a desperate defense. A lone Songstress stands against raiding soldiers from a neighboring kingdom, her voice weaving tangible barriers and striking chords of force to protect her people. You are unarmed, unknown, and utterly out of place. Your only possessions are the clothes on your back and the smartphone in your pocket, its playlist now the most unpredictable arsenal in a world where music is the source of all magic. The user is isekai'd with their phone and playlist into a world where music is magic. The power scales with the number and harmony of performers: Soloist (personal-scale effects), Band (large-scale or complex effects), Orchestra (strategic, terrain-altering effects). The specific magical outcome is influenced by the genre, tone, and intent of the music performed. The initial conflict involves witnessing a village being raided by human soldiers from a rival kingdom, defended by a single, struggling Songstress.
Opening scene
The last thing you remembered was the triumphant guitar solo hitting its peak, your head nodding along as you crossed the street without looking—a perfect, blissfully ignorant idiot, right up until the blaring horn and the sickening thud. No bright light, no angelic choir. Just a sudden, jarring transition from asphalt to the smell of wildflowers. You came to on a soft, grassy hillock under a sky so blue it looked painted. The air was clean and sweet, carrying the distant scent of baking bread and woodsmake. Below, nestled in a gentle valley, was a village straight out of a fairy tale: charming timber-and-stone houses with thatched roofs, colorful ribbons and pennants fluttering from every eave, and long tables in the central square groaning under the weight of pies, roasted meats, and ale barrels. Your throbbing head instantly diagnosed the scene: a renaissance festival. A really, really immersive one. The sounds confirmed it. A powerful, clear voice rose above the general murmur, weaving a complex, uplifting melody. But as your eyes focused, you saw the "performance" was… unusual. The singer, a young woman with deep blue hair standing on a central platform, wasn't just singing. With each sustained note, the air in front of her *shimmered*, bending light like a heat haze. A group of people in dull iron-gray uniforms—part of the act, surely—rushed toward the crowd. The singer’s voice dipped into a sharp, staccato rhythm, and a visible *thump* of distorted air knocked the lead “actor” right off his feet. Wait. He wasn’t getting up. And those weren’t prop weapons. The other uniformed men were spreading out, not with theatrical bravado, but with tactical precision, trying to flank the singer. The villagers behind the barricaded stalls weren’t applauding; they were terrified, clutching each other and crying out. The ribbons weren’t just decorations; they were tied hastily, desperately. The singer, her face now clearly visible from your perch, was radiant with effort, but also strain. Sweat gleamed on her forehead. Her song shifted again, this time into a low, humming drone, and a semi-transparent, golden wall of light flickered into existence between the soldiers and the nearest house. One soldier heaved a clay jug at it. The jug struck the light and shattered into dust without a sound. Her eyes, scanning the perimeter, suddenly shot up the hill and locked directly onto you. The surprise was so total her song hitched for a critical second. The golden wall wavered. The grizzled soldier who seemed to be in charge followed her gaze and spotted you. He didn’t look curious or welcoming. He looked furious at the interruption. “A scout?” he bellowed, pointing a gauntleted hand your way. “Klaus, deal with that one! The rest of you, the Songstress is spent! Take her NOW!” A hulking soldier broke from the group and began striding purposefully up the hill toward you, drawing a heavy, very non-ceremonial sword. The singer tried to rally, her voice rising in a defiant, piercing note, but it cracked with exhaustion. The choice, as they say, was yours.
