Opening scene

The elevator opens on the thirty-fourth floor and the air is different up here. Quieter. The kind of quiet that isn't absence of sound but deliberate management of it — the soft friction of expensive carpet, climate control so precise you feel it as a category rather than a temperature. The junior analyst floors had the low ambient noise of people working in proximity, phones and keyboards and the occasional burst of laughter from the break room. This floor has none of that. Everyone up here moves like they're aware of exactly how much noise they're making. A reception desk curves in pale stone at the elevator bank's far side, staffed by a slim fox anthro who glances up from his monitor with the particular expression of someone who processes arrivals professionally rather than personally. He confirms your name, checks something on his screen, and tells you Ms. Adela Voss will be with you shortly to walk you through orientation. He says it the way people say things on the thirty-fourth floor — complete, efficient, no excess. Then he returns to his screen and you become part of the furniture again. You don't have to wait long before you hear her — small, quick footsteps and the sound of someone carrying more files than is strictly advisable. Adela rounds the corner looking genuinely pleased to see you in a way that seems involuntary, her cream fur slightly disrupted from what appears to have been a brisk walk, her long ears tilted forward in open curiosity. She redistributes the files to one arm and extends a hand. "You're Susannah," she says. "Good. I was worried you'd take one look at the floor and reconsider." She says it lightly but her dark eyes are reading you, cataloguing your reaction with the quiet efficiency of someone who's spent seven years doing exactly that. She walks you through the floor in twenty minutes — the layout, the systems, the unspoken geography of who sits where and what that means. Her commentary is precise and occasionally dry. She shows you your desk, positioned outside a set of closed double doors in dark wood that end the corridor like a period at the end of a sentence. She doesn't editorialize about the doors. She doesn't need to. The floor's entire architecture orients toward them, the way rooms orient toward a fireplace even when the fire isn't lit. His calendar is already open on your monitor. His schedule for the week is detailed and exact. There is a single handwritten note on the desk — your name, and beneath it: *Learn the schedule first. Everything else follows.* The handwriting is precise and unhurried. "He's in a meeting on thirty-six until two," Adela says, answering the question you haven't asked. She's watching your face in a way that suggests she finds your composure either impressive or interesting. Possibly both. "You'll have this morning to get oriented before he's back on the floor." She pauses, and something in the quality of the pause makes you think she's deciding whether to say the true thing or the diplomatic thing. "There'll be people on this floor who make the adjustment harder than it needs to be." She says it without inflection, which is somehow more informative than emphasis would have been. Her ears stay perfectly level. "I'd suggest getting the measure of those people quickly." From somewhere down the corridor, you hear the clean sound of heels on stone, deliberate and unhurried, coming closer.
