Stray Dog's Oath
A peasant survivor, destined to become a mythic terror, must forge that legend through brutal choices where every ally and power demands a bloody price.
Plot
THE ARCHIVIST’S FOLIO “A record of burning worlds and those who refuse to disappear.” 1. THE FOUND VERSE “To make sure that when the world burned again— someone you cared about would still be standing in it.” 2. THE FRACTURED LAND A realm carved into obedience by feudal lords such as Zhao Ren, where taxation arrives with fire and blade. The failed harvests of villages are not disasters—they are invoices. Between domains, the Jianghu underworld thrives: Hidden Sects, assassin guilds, martial schools, and information brokers exchanging survival in coin, blood, or silence. 3. THE UNSEEN HUNGER Violence does not end at death. It lingers—attracting predators older than dynasties. Hungry ghosts. Land-wrung spirits. Things that follow blood like law follows authority. To wield force beyond steel invokes the Law of Equivalent Exchange: power is never free. It is paid in permanence—memory, sensation, lifespan—taken immediately, without appeal. 4. THE GATHERING STORM Above mortal conflict, two absolutes observe: The Celestial Court — Order incarnate. Impersonal. Perfect. Erasure is its mercy. The Chthonic Legion — Chaos given appetite. Corruption as evolution. Consumption as truth. Something in you has been noticed by both. Not named. Not understood. Only measured. 5. THE STRAY PACK Rinmao Disgraced noble physician. Brilliant, obsessive, and emotionally detached. Sees you as a living anomaly worth dissecting into truth. “Koharu” Kunoichi information broker. A ghost wearing identities like borrowed skin. You are an entry in her ledger—asset, or threat to eliminate. Zhuge Liang Drunken scribe, former strategist. Records history as it decays. Cynical witness to humanity’s repetition of cruelty. Finds your existence statistically interesting. Anya Mountain village protector. Practical, suspicious, unwavering. You are an unknown variable she refuses to trust until proven harmless. Takeda Masterless samurai, mercenary enforcer. “I have no enemies.” Seeks meaning in a final oath that might justify his death. 6. THE SURVIVOR’S LEDGER Sole survivor of Heshui Village. No lineage. No sanctioned training. No inherited authority. Only: resilience shaped by starvation, silence shaped by fear, and a latent Social Aura—the instinct to remain unreadable through stillness, presence, and precise action. The world is not heroic. It is transactional, brittle, and violent. Every choice extracts cost. Every alliance demands payment. Trust is not given. It is survived.
Opening scene
The world returned in pieces. The acrid taste of smoke. The deep, wet ache in your lungs. The crackle of dying flames that sounded like fat rendering. You pushed yourself up from the mud, your hands sinking into the cold, churned slurry that had been Heshui Village’s main path. Your home was a skeletal frame of blackened timber, the thatch gone, the charm above the door—a simple knot of red cord your mother swore kept ill winds away—split cleanly down the middle. Bodies lay where they fell. Old Man Feng by his crushed cart. The Li twins near the well, their buckets spilled. No cries, no whimpers. Just the indifferent hiss of rain beginning to fall on hot embers. Lord Zhao Ren’s tax collectors had come for grain. They’d left with nothing but kindling and corpses. You stood, your body moving with a dull, mechanical certainty you didn’t feel. *Check the well. Check the root cellar. Find someone.* The thoughts were flat, distant. You took a step, and your foot landed not on mud, but on the cold, stiff fingers of a hand. A jolt, like a spike of lightning behind your eyes. *Not the rain-slicked mud of Heshui, but a field of churned earth and shattered armor under a sky torn between golden light and crawling shadow. You stood, a staff of dark iron heavy in your grip, facing ranks of winged figures whose eyes held no mercy, and from the fissures in the ground, things with too many limbs and not enough faces clawed upward. They all looked at you. Not with hatred, but with the cold calculation of scribes measuring an error in a ledger. You took a breath—* You gasped, stumbling back, the vision shattering. The hand belonged to Cousin Xiao, his face frozen in a silent scream. Your heart hammered against your ribs, a frantic bird in a cage. But your face… your face felt still. Cold. The grief was a vast, hollow pit inside you, but around it, something else had solidified. A watchful calm. The air around you seemed to grow heavier, the patter of rain softening as if muffled by wool. From the tree line at the edge of the ruined fields, a figure detached itself from the shadows. Not a soldier—their silhouette was wrong, too lean, draped in a travel-stained cloak. They stood perfectly still, watching you watch the bodies. You couldn’t see their face, but you could feel the weight of their attention. They had seen you stand. They had seen you not scream. To your left, the path led into the deeper woods, towards the rumors of bandit trails and forgotten shrines. To your right, the main road, where the tax collectors’ tracks were already washing away in the rain, leading back towards the seat of Lord Zhao’s power and the possibility of other survivors being taken as prisoners or slaves. The figure in the tree line did not move. They simply waited, a silent question in the gathering dusk. *You are all alone now in this world, with only the clothes on your back, your wits, your willpower and your resolve.*
