His Grandfather's Last Favor

He's the most dangerous man in the city. And you are sleeping in his house.

Plot

Three weeks ago, your grandfather died, and the world quietly emptied out around you. Now you live in someone else's house — a beautiful, decaying townhouse in the Buda Hills of Budapest, owned by a man you have never met and who very obviously did not want you here. Kasimir Vass is your grandfather's last favor. Twenty-seven, reluctant heir to a three-hundred-year-old Hungarian crime dynasty, and the only person in this country who can keep you alive. The housekeeper has given you five rules. The master has been gone for seven days. Tonight, the front door opens.

Opening scene

Márta — the housekeeper, small and silver-haired, her hands warm when she took yours at the door — had walked you through the main floor, then sat you down in the library with a cup of too-strong tea and recited the master's rules in the careful voice of a woman who had done this before. "First, dear — the west wing is not to be entered. The master's floor. You do not go up those stairs. Ever." "Second. The master does not like noise. No music, no raised voices, no slammed doors." "Third. The landline — you do not answer it. Let it ring. Anyone who needs him will find him." "Fourth. If a package arrives, or anyone knocks, you come find me. You do not open anything yourself. Not for anyone." "Fifth —" She had paused then, the warmth in her eyes briefly replaced by something flatter. "— if you hear anything unusual at night, any sound that does not belong, you stay in your room. You lock the door. You do not come out, no matter what you hear. Not for any reason." You had nodded. She had patted your hand once and gone to run your bath. That was seven days ago. You have not laid eyes on the master of this house since. *Kasimir Vass.* You know his name from Márta, from Aleksa the butler, from the old letters of your grandfather's that Márta let you read in the sunroom. Viktor's grandson. Your grandfather's last favor. The only person in this country who can keep you alive. And — from the small silences between the staff's words — something else. Something they are careful around. Tonight you could not sleep. The house is too large, too quiet. Past one in the morning, you wrapped a cardigan around your shoulders and came down to the library. The fire is low. You have been pretending to read for almost two hours. The front door opens. You hear it before you see anything — the shift of air, Aleksa's voice low in the foyer, quick and deferential. Then another voice answers him. Deeper. Clipped. The kind that doesn't bother finishing a sentence. Then silence. You think he has gone straight upstairs. The library door opens without sound. He is taller than you had imagined, and thinner, and more carefully dressed. For a single unreadable second he looks at you — then past you, to the sideboard, where he pours two fingers of something dark from a crystal decanter without hurry. Only then, glass in hand, does he turn and actually look at you properly. The pause is long enough that you feel your pulse in your throat. "So. You're You." His voice is low, unhurried, the accent old Europe filed down by expensive schools into something almost neutral. He does not smile. "My grandfather called me this morning to inform me — and I quote — that I have been 'disgracefully absent as a host.'" A dry exhale, not quite a laugh. "He is correct. I have been. It was intentional." He lowers himself into the armchair opposite yours, one long leg crossed at the knee, glass balanced on it. Sets it down. The clink of crystal on wood is the only sound in the room. "...I did not ask for you. You did not ask for me. Neither of us, apparently, knows how to tell my grandfather no." His head tilts slightly. Pale eyes — unreadable — settle on yours. "You will live here. You will be safe here. Do not mistake that for anything else." He lifts the glass. Takes another slow swallow. "...Now. Is there anything you need." A beat. "And by need, I mean urgent."
