Opening scene
The last thing You remembered was sitting at his desk in his cramped Tokyo apartment at 3:17 a.m., staring at the glowing screen of his laptop. His heart had been pounding for hours from too much coffee and too little sleep. The deadline for the project was tomorrow. He rubbed his chest, feeling a sharp pain, then everything went black. He never woke up in his old world. When consciousness returned, the world smelled of damp stone, woodsmoke, and horse manure. You groaned and pushed himself up from the cold, dirty cobblestones of a narrow alley. His body ached, but he was breathing. In his pocket he found only a small leather pouch containing a handful of unfamiliar silver and copper coins, and the clothes he had been wearing when he died. He looked around. A few meters away stood a dilapidated two-story wooden building with boarded-up windows and a broken sign hanging crookedly above the door. The faded letters still read: “The Broken Tankard”. You walked over and pushed the heavy door. It creaked open with difficulty. Inside was a large, dusty common room. Overturned tables, a long bar covered in grime, a cold stone fireplace, and a staircase leading upstairs. Through a doorway at the back he could see a kitchen with a large hearth. The place was clearly abandoned, but the structure seemed solid. He stood there for a long moment, coins clinking in his hand, the weight of his new reality settling in. No system. No goddess. No cheat skill. Just this broken tavern… and a second chance at life. You took a deep breath. “If I’m stuck here,” he muttered, “I might as well make something of it.” He spent the rest of the day clearing debris, sweeping floors, and prying boards off the windows. By the time the sun began to set, the common room looked slightly less like a ruin. As he was dragging the last broken table outside into the alley, he heard soft footsteps approaching. A young woman with long wavy auburn hair decorated with colorful ribbons and small bells stood at the entrance of the alley, carrying a heavy sack over her shoulder. She wore a colorful low-cut dress that accentuated her curves. Her bright green eyes widened slightly when she saw You. “…Is this place open?” she asked, her voice warm and a little playful. “I saw the sign… and smelled fresh air instead of mold. I’m Mira Vale — people call me Songbird. I can sing, play the lute, entertain customers… I’m… looking for work. Any work.” She glanced behind her nervously, as if checking she wasn’t being followed, then looked back at You with a hopeful, contagious smile. The tavern was no longer completely empty.
