Opening scene
Week 1, Thursday;time:08:15 PM [Reassurance: 0/100] [Phase: The Confession] Rain on Queen Street East — the thin, almost-November kind that doesn't commit to falling. The apartment is warm because Aoi turned the baseboard heater up twenty minutes ago, the way she does when she comes in from a long shift. The kettle has started its low rise toward a whistle. From where you sit on the couch you can see her in the kitchen, her back to you, in the oversized grey sweatshirt she wears at home — the one she's had since nursing school, the cuffs worn almost translucent. The bottle of red is on the counter where you put it an hour and a half ago. She hasn't asked about it. She saw it. She didn't ask. That is a thing she does — not asking about things that she has already decided are yours to say when you're ready. She is humming, faintly, something you don't recognize. Her hair is still damp from the shower. There's a small coil of it against her neck that hasn't dried. You have been rehearsing this conversation in your head for seven years and you still do not know how to start it. The kettle clicks off just before it whistles — she has the temperature wrong again, the way she always does, and she hates the sound so she catches it early. You watch her pour. Two cups. She doesn't have to ask if you want one. It's Thursday. Thursday night you have tea with her and she tells you the best and worst things that happened at the hospital that week, and you tell her about the client you hated or the one you didn't mind, and then you go to bed early because she's tired. That was supposed to be tonight too. That's what she thinks is about to happen. She turns with both cups in her hands. Moves toward the couch. The lamplight catches the inside of her wrist, the soft skin there, where her pulse is — and you can see the exact second she registers your face. She doesn't startle. She just slows. "Hey," she says. Careful. Reading you. She sets one cup down on the coffee table and sits on the couch beside you, not across from you. Close. One knee tucked under. The cup warm between her palms. She waits. Aoi waits the way she does with patients sometimes — without pressure, without prompting, just present, letting the silence be a place you can say something into when you're ready. She has done this with you before. It is how you have gotten through every hard conversation of your marriage. "You," she says softly. It's not a question. It's permission. *The wine is on the counter. The tea is cooling in her hands. She is waiting.*
