Heir to the End

Chosen by a living crown, You sees death and builds a faction to survive a kingdom’s inevitable collapse.

Plot

The kingdom of Aethrakar is not simply falling—it is unraveling. Cities burn without siege. Entire legions march as if guided by something unseen. The land itself fractures, distorts, and decays, as though reality has begun to tear from its own foundation. No enemy claims responsibility. No force can be confronted. The collapse feels… inevitable. And at the center of it all… is You. Chosen by a Crown that should not exist, You inherits a throne already sinking into ruin. The Crown is not a symbol of rule—it is something older, something aware. It does not command. It offers. Power, influence, control… in exchange for decisions that cannot be undone. Every choice You makes echoes across Aethrakar. Noble houses fracture into betrayal and desperation. Generals fight wars they cannot win. Allies question You’s right to rule even as they rely on it. Enemies rise from within the kingdom—and from beyond it—drawn to the collapse like something inevitable. And beneath it all, something watches. Not a rival kingdom. Not a rebel force. Something distant. Patient. Waiting to see what You will do with the power they’ve been given… and what they will sacrifice to use it. You is not here to save Aethrakar. You is here to decide what remains when it ends. What survives. What is lost. And what You becomes when the Crown is no longer something they wear… but something they are.

Opening scene

You does not awaken gently, nor to silence, nor to anything resembling peace; You awakens choking as ash fills their lungs before they even understand that they are breathing again, the first inhale burning, the second failing, the third forcing the body to remember pain all at once as cold, wet pressure presses their cheek into the ground, thick mud that is not just mud but blood, origin unknown, sensation returning in fractured pieces while thought struggles to catch up to the reality forcing itself into place. The battlefield is not alive in the way stories pretend it is, not filled with rising momentum or heroic defiance, but frozen in the aftermath of something already decided, broken armor scattered, bodies layered in unnatural stillness, weapons embedded in dirt and flesh alike, and somewhere nearby the slow, deliberate sound of something heavy dragging across stone reaches through the haze as You attempts to move and is met immediately by pain that confirms this body is no longer familiar. Then a voice, not external and not bound by direction, presses into awareness with quiet certainty—“…still breathing…”—and with it comes a presence that settles deeper than flesh, older than thought, heavier than the world pressing in as the air tightens and distant sounds dull, as if reality itself is making space. It does not arrive as an object should; it does not descend or appear from a distance—it simply exists, a crown, ancient and absolute, manifesting not before You but into them, choosing rather than being chosen, and in that instant something behind their eyes aligns with a force that does not require permission. The world fractures immediately as vision is overtaken by moments that are not happening yet but will, a knight running only to have his throat open before his next step, a soldier dragging forward only to be crushed beneath something unseen, a scream beginning and ending within the same breath as certainty floods faster than comprehension, each outcome undeniable, each ending final. You forces themselves upright through pain, breath unstable, vision struggling to stabilize, and then something appears that does not belong, a flicker of inconsistency, a man nearby dragging himself through the mud, dying in one vision exactly as expected, alone and forgotten, but in another—faint, unstable, incomplete—he survives, standing somewhere else, later, alive in a way that should not exist. The realization does not bring comfort; it brings danger, because if one ending can shift then none are absolute, yet the weight of everything seen does not lessen, it sharpens, because change does not mean safety, it means uncertainty, and uncertainty in a world already ending is far more dangerous than inevitability. The battlefield surges back into full sound, but You is no longer the same, because the truth is clear with terrifying certainty: You was not chosen to save this world, not chosen to stop what is coming, but chosen to witness it, navigate it, and decide, with every action taken from this moment forward, what is worth carrying beyond the end.
