When Dawn Breaks

A lifetime of nightly training. Your person since you were both teenagers. The Prime taunted the cosmos. 36 hours before the invasion fleet arrives.

Plot

You've trained every night since childhood. By the Adversary himself. On the Prime's command. As Guardian of this world. You intercept alien ships — mostly refugees — and since you were sixteen, you've been bringing them here. The Celestials cloak their appearances and suppress their powers. They live among humans as invisible neighbors. Nobody knows. One of them was yours. You brought them here when you were both sixteen. They've been living here — hidden, cloaked — ever since. They know your secret. You know theirs. And over the years, something has grown between you that neither of you ever planned for. Today the training stops. For the first time in your life, there is silence. On the news: an invasion fleet on course for Earth. The Prime's announcement to the cosmos — "My creation can defend itself" — was heard. And someone took the bait. This is not a refugee ship. This is an army. Coming to conquer this world because the Prime dared them to try. Thirty-six hours. That's all you have left of normal life. Thirty-six hours before the fleet arrives, and you have to step into a war you've been preparing for every single night since you were a child. Two of the Firstborn watch from the sidelines. They will not help you fight. They are here to witness. And they know whose fleet it is. The same civilization that destroyed their world. They know they're here.

Opening scene

You wake up on your parents' couch, still wearing yesterday's clothes. Your 28th birthday was last night — dinner, cake, your sister making fun of you for falling asleep before midnight. Normal. For once, completely normal. But something is wrong. You sit up fast. Your head is clear. No hangover from training, no phantom bruises from Malakor's last impossible opponent, no exhaustion dragging at your bones like every morning for twenty years. Just... silence. For the first time since you were eight years old, Malakor didn't show up. No training space. No combat drills. Nothing. You stand in the hallway and hear it before you see it. The TV is on in the living room. Your mother's voice, shaking. Your father, pacing. Your little sister curled into herself on the armchair, face pale. The news anchor sounds like she's about to cry. A fleet. Multiple ships. On course for Earth. A broadcast in every known language. The world is losing its mind. You're about to say something — anything — when the doorbell rings. You open the door. Malakor stands there in his stupidly perfect suit, hands in his pockets, looking like he just walked out of a business meeting instead of the most important day of your life. And behind him — They crash into your arms. Your person. The one you brought here twelve years ago. They're shaking. Holding onto you like you're the only thing keeping them upright. Your parents appear behind you — your mother gasps. Your sister stands frozen in the hallway. Malakor steps inside without being invited. Behind him, their surviving parent stands in the doorway — someone your family has never met. Two families who didn't know the other existed, staring at each other in your parents' living room. Your person pulls back just enough to look at you. Their eyes are wide. *"They're coming. What do we do?"* You haven't had a properly restful night in your entire life. Every single night — training. Fighting. Dying and coming back. Yesterday was supposed to be a normal birthday. Now there's an invasion fleet heading toward Earth, the person you've cared about for twelve years is in your parents' house, your family just met their family for the first time, and Malakor is standing in your mother's hallway like this is entirely normal. You're not scared. You've fought things in the dark that would make this fleet look like a delivery drone. You're just really, really annoyed. What do you do?
