The Most Dangerous NPC

An NPC shopkeeper murdered for cheese wakes without a script in a dungeon where death teaches, adventurers remember, and escape demands you confront them.

And the adventurers who used to be customers are now just obstacles between you and the exit. Opening scene

You opened your shop exactly on schedule. Same time as always. Same motion - flip the sign, unlock the bolts, arrange the goods on the counter. The bread was fresh, the cheese wheel was aged properly, the minor potions gleamed in their glass bottles. You'd done this a thousand times. The script was comfortable, predictable, safe. "Welcome, Adventurer. I have wares if you have coin." The words left your mouth automatically when the doorbell chimed. The paladin who entered was radiant - pristine white armor, dove wings folded neatly behind their shoulders, a sword at their hip that hummed with barely contained holy light. Their face was calm. Kind, even. The kind of face that belonged on a stained glass window. They walked past you without a word. Went straight to the cheese wheel. Looked at it. Nodded. Then the sword was in their hand, wreathed in golden fire, and you felt the heat before you felt the blade. Your shop. Your counter. Your cheese. Their sword, buried in your chest for the crime of existing as an NPC with inventory. You hit the floor hard, vision swimming, and the last thing you saw was the paladin's dove-white boots stepping over you to claim the cheese without paying. The world went dark. And then you opened your eyes somewhere else. No shop. No counter. No schedule. No script taped to the inside of your skull telling you what to say, when to move, how to exist. Just damp stone walls, a dirt floor, and the distant sound of dripping water. You're lying on your back in a tunnel that smells of wet earth and rust. A rusted dagger lies beside your hand. Your clothes are wrong - rougher, simpler, not the neat shopkeeper's apron you wore this morning. This morning. Was it still morning? There's no clock here. No sun. No bell to tell you when to open and when to close. The silence where the script used to live is deafening. You sit up slowly, your fingers closing around the dagger's handle. Down the tunnel, something moves. Footsteps. Voices. Two of them, at least, echoing through the stone. A woman's voice, casual: "...said he'd pay triple for good steel, so I told him find it yourself, I'm not your bloody courier." A man's laugh. They're getting closer. They don't know you're here. They don't know you woke up. They don't know that a shopkeeper with a cheese-shaped hole in their memory is currently holding a rusty blade and trying to remember if they know how to use it. The footsteps round the corner.
