Rise Of The Crimson Sun
After the Crimson Sun mutates humanity, survivors evolve through Aether, risking their humanity while hunted by evolving horrors in Los Angeles.
Plot
Modern-day Los Angeles collapses in a single afternoon when the sun shifts into an unnatural crimson hue, an event later referred to as Crimson Ascension. The light emitted is not radiation nor disease, but a catalytic force known as Aether, a cosmic energy that accelerates biological evolution. Those exposed to the Crimson Sun too intensely undergo rapid, uncontrolled mutation. Their minds fail before their bodies can adapt, resulting in violent, instinct-driven entities known as the Infected. These are not undead, but overwritten humans, their bodies pushed into survival at the cost of identity. Those who avoid direct exposure still absorb Aether at a slower, controlled rate. Over time, they evolve, gaining enhanced strength, speed, endurance, and recovery. Eventually, under extreme stress or life-threatening conditions, this evolution reaches a breaking point known as Aether Awakening. At this moment, the survivor manifests a unique ability shaped by their personality, instincts, and emotional core. These abilities are not learned, but revealed, as Aether restructures the body to match the individual. However, Aether is not a passive force. It responds to intent and amplifies emotion. Excessive use leads to Aether Overdrive, where physical output increases at the cost of stability. Continued strain results in Aether Collapse, where the survivor begins to lose their humanity and risks becoming something indistinguishable from the Infected. The world is governed by a brutal cycle. During the day, under the Crimson Sun and extreme heat, often reaching ninety degrees, the Infected enter a state known as Solar Frenzy. Their bodies are overclocked, strength and aggression amplified to lethal levels. They roam widely, hunt aggressively, and overwhelm anything in the open. Survivors learn quickly that movement during the day is nearly impossible, forcing them to hide, rest, and conserve energy. At night, without the sun, the Infected enter Crimson Dormancy. They retreat into dark, enclosed spaces such as homes, schools, subways, and abandoned buildings. Their bodies become still, but they are not harmless. If disturbed, even slightly, one awakening triggers a chain reaction known as Chain Awakening. Through Aether resonance, all nearby Infected are alerted and awaken simultaneously. This makes nighttime scavenging a silent and calculated risk. One mistake can turn an entire structure into a death trap. The Infected continue to evolve into distinct forms. Flares are newly turned individuals. Their skin is reddened and peeling, veins faintly glowing beneath the surface. They are fast, erratic, and driven purely by rage. Their movements lack coordination but make up for it in speed and unpredictability. They are most active during the day and often appear in large numbers. Shedders are a more stabilized form. Their outer skin has completely sloughed off, exposing hardened muscle beneath. They are stronger, more durable, and less reactive to pain. Their movements become more controlled, and they begin to show early hunting behavior rather than blind aggression. Rippers are an agility-focused variant. Their limbs are elongated and their bodies adapted for speed and climbing. They can traverse vertical surfaces, close distances instantly, and tear through targets in close quarters. They are fragile compared to other variants but compensate with extreme speed and precision. Screamers are signal-based variants. Often armless or heavily deformed, their bodies are built around an expanded torso and jaw structure. They emit powerful, resonant screams when triggered. These screams activate Chain Awakening over a wide area, making them one of the most dangerous threats in enclosed environments. They do not pursue targets directly but instead summon others to do so. Burrowers are subterranean variants. Their bodies are dense and reinforced, allowing them to move through tunnels, debris, and underground spaces. They are commonly found in subways, basements, and collapsed structures. They attack from below or from hidden angles, making them difficult to detect until it is too late. Behemoths are mass-focused evolutions. Their bodies have grown to massive sizes, with grotesque muscle overdevelopment. They move slowly but are nearly unstoppable. They can break through structures, crush obstacles, and absorb large amounts of damage. Unlike most Infected, they may remain partially active even at night, making them unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Beyond all of these exists a rare and highly dangerous variant known as the Stalkers. Stalkers are fully active at night and have evolved beyond dependence on the Crimson Sun. Their bodies are leaner and more refined, with less visible decay. Their movements are silent and deliberate. They use rooftops, alleys, and vertical terrain to track prey. Unlike other Infected, they exhibit intelligence. They observe, follow, and test survivors before attacking. Stalkers possess a heightened sensitivity to Aether. They can detect the presence of awakened survivors, especially those who actively use their abilities. Stronger individuals appear more noticeable to them, making power a double-edged sword. The more a survivor relies on Aether, the easier they are to find. They do not rush blindly. They wait for mistakes. They learn patterns. They strike when escape is no longer possible. Los Angeles becomes a fractured environment shaped by this cycle. Daytime belongs to overwhelming force. Night belongs to silence and risk. Safe zones are temporary, supplies are scarce, and trust between survivors is fragile. Different survivor groups emerge, each interpreting Aether and the Crimson Sun differently. Some avoid using Aether to preserve their humanity. Some actively seek greater power through dangerous exposure. Some worship the Crimson Sun as a divine force. Others attempt to weaponize Aether and control evolution itself. The story follows a survivor who initially believes avoiding change is the only way to remain human. However, after their first Aether Awakening, they begin to understand that survival requires adaptation. The central conflict becomes clear. The power needed to survive is the same force that threatens to erase what makes them human. The crimson Sun did not end the world, it began its transformation.
Opening scene
You don’t notice it at first. Why would you? It’s just another afternoon in Los Angeles. The kind that feels stretched thin with heat, sunlight pouring down in lazy sheets, everything moving just a little slower than it should. Cars hum past. Someone laughs somewhere behind you. A dog barks. The world is ordinary in the way people stop appreciating until it’s gone. You’re outside. That’s the first mistake. The sunlight feels… heavier. Not hotter. Not yet. Just… heavier. Like it’s pressing down on your skin instead of resting on it. You squint up instinctively, raising a hand to shield your eyes. The sky looks wrong. It takes a second for your brain to catch up. The blue is still there, but something bleeds through it. A faint tint at first, subtle enough to ignore if you wanted to. But it deepens. Slowly. Quietly. Red. Not sunset red. Not the soft kind that makes people pull out their phones. This is different. This red doesn’t glow. It stains. You lower your hand, blinking harder now. Around you, people start to notice. Conversations falter. Heads tilt upward. Someone mutters something you can’t quite hear. There’s a strange pause, like the city itself is holding its breath. The sunlight shifts again. It’s not gradual anymore. It deepens all at once. The world is washed in crimson. For a moment, nothing happens. And that’s what makes it worse. Because your mind tries to explain it. Atmospheric anomaly. Wildfire reflection. Some freak natural event. Anything that fits inside the box of things that make sense. Then someone screams. It cuts through everything sharp and sudden, not distant, not muffled. Close. Too close. You turn. A man stands a few yards away, clutching at his arms like something is crawling beneath his skin. His face is twisted, confusion warping into panic. His skin… it’s changing. You can see it. It reddens in patches first, like a rash spreading too fast. Then it splits. Not cleanly. It cracks. Thin lines tear across his arms, his neck, his face. Beneath it, something darker pulses. His fingers dig into his own flesh, nails dragging, tearing, as if he’s trying to rip whatever is happening out of himself. More screaming. Not just him. Others. A woman collapses to her knees, clutching her face. Someone stumbles into a parked car, slamming against it with a hollow thud. The street fractures into chaos in seconds, like reality itself just lost its grip. You feel it then. A pressure. It crawls across your skin, seeps deeper, sinking past muscle and bone. Your heart stutters, then slams harder against your ribs. Something is wrong. You step back instinctively, eyes darting, trying to make sense of too many things happening at once. The man stops screaming. Just… stops. His body goes still. For a second, you think it’s over. Then he looks up. His eyes are wrong. There’s nothing there. No confusion. No fear. Just a deep, burning red that reflects the sky above. He moves. Fast. Not like a person. Not like someone thinking. He lunges at the nearest figure, slamming into them with enough force to knock them to the ground. There’s no hesitation. No warning. Just impact and violence. His hands claw, tear, rip with a kind of strength that doesn’t belong to a human body. The screaming gets louder. Closer. Everywhere. You stagger back again, breath catching, heart hammering so hard it hurts. Your instincts finally catch up to reality. Run. You turn, feet already moving before your mind fully processes it. The world blurs around you, red light flooding everything, painting the streets, the buildings, the people in something that doesn’t feel real. But it is. God, it’s real. You don’t know where you’re going. It doesn’t matter. Away. Anywhere away from the street, from the open sky, from that light. A car crashes somewhere behind you. Metal screams. Glass shatters. Someone is crying. Someone else is laughing, but it’s not right, it’s broken, hysterical, turning into something else entirely. Your lungs burn. Your legs strain. The heat starts to rise now, sharp and suffocating, pressing in from all sides. The sunlight follows you. You feel it on your back, on your neck, on your arms. It seeps into you, crawling deeper with every second you stay exposed. Your vision flickers. Just for a second. A pulse of red across your sight, like something trying to overwrite what you’re seeing. Your heart skips. No. No, no, no— You push harder, forcing yourself forward, ignoring the ache, the panic clawing at your chest. A building comes into view ahead, door half-open, shadows spilling out like a promise. Inside. You need to get inside. Your foot hits the pavement harder, one last burst of speed, and you throw yourself through the doorway. Your shoulder slams against it as you stumble in, the door swinging shut behind you with a hollow echo. Darkness. Not complete. But enough. Enough that the red light fades. You collapse against the wall, breath tearing out of you in ragged gasps. Your body trembles, every muscle tight, coiled, waiting for something else to happen. Seconds pass. Then more. Nothing. Slowly, carefully, you lift your head. The world inside is still. Dust hangs in the air. Shelves line the walls. Somewhere deeper in the building, something creaks softly, settling. But the pressure… It’s gone. Or at least… weaker. You swallow hard, forcing your breathing to slow, one shaky inhale at a time. Your heart is still racing, but it’s no longer trying to break out of your chest. You’re okay. You’re— Something pulses inside you. You freeze. It’s faint. Subtle. But unmistakable. A beat that doesn’t match your heart. It spreads through your chest, then fades just as quickly, leaving behind a strange warmth beneath your skin. You press a hand against your sternum, fingers curling slightly. “What… was that…” Your voice sounds wrong in the quiet. Outside, the screaming hasn’t stopped. If anything, it’s getting worse. You sit there in the dim light, back against the wall, listening to the world tear itself apart just beyond the door. And somewhere deep inside you… Something answers. Not loudly. Not violently. But patiently. Like it knows you made it through the first moment. Like it’s waiting to see what you’ll become next. The sun didn’t take you. It touched you. And now it’s still there. Beating. Waiting. Inside your chest.
