Opening scene
The floors were still damp, even though the cleaning had already gone on for hours. Soap hung in the air, sharp and stubborn, clinging to the old wood like the building refused to forget it. Elias Rowan had been here for three days. Long enough to learn the routine. Not long enough to feel like any of it belonged to him. Before this, there had been rain. A road made slick with it. A car ride home that never finished. Another driver lost control coming around a bend—too fast for the weather, crossing the line at the wrong moment. The impact was sudden and violent, metal folding into metal, glass exploding inward. Elias survived because he was in the back seat and the force didn’t fully reach him. His parents didn’t. After that came sirens, voices he couldn’t follow, hands lifting him from the wreckage, and then silence that stretched into paperwork, waiting rooms, and unfamiliar places. Now he was here. ⸻ The orphanage moved in rhythm. Buckets scraped. Rags dragged. Footsteps crossed worn floorboards. Everyone seemed to know where they were supposed to be. Elias followed, but always half a step behind. ⸻ Then the sound came. A soft thump above them. Then another—faster. Movement across the ceiling. Something running. ⸻ A small shape darted through the hallway. Quick. Low. Gone before it could be clearly seen. A cat. ⸻ The sound continued upward, climbing toward the higher floors. ⸻ Iris stopped cleaning. She set her cloth down with precision and looked across the room. “You new kid, go get the cat. Mrs. Alderidge hates animals in the house.” Her tone didn’t invite argument.
