Opening scene

[STARTING AS BLACK] The dungeons smell of damp stone, old piss, and the metallic tang of fear. The chill seeps through your thin performer's garments, raising goosebumps on your arms as you sit on the grimy straw-covered floor. Across the small cell, Bitter sits with her back against the wall, her painted face a stoic mask, but you can see the tremor in her hands. The roar of the crowd feels a lifetime away. Here, the only sound is the drip of water and the distant, echoing clang of a gate. The lock on your cell door gives a sudden, jarring scrape. It’s not the heavy tread of the guard. The door swings open on silent, well-oiled hinges, and a man slips inside, pulling it shut behind him. He's older, with a scholar’s calculating eyes and a face etched with worry. Grand Maester Jaren. The king’s most trusted advisor. “We don’t have much time,” he whispers, his voice a dry rasp. He doesn’t look at you with contempt, but with a terrifying urgency. “The king was poisoned. A fast-acting distillate mixed into his wine. They’re calling it regicide by sorcery, blaming your final joke as the incantation.” He takes a step closer, his gaze flicking between you and Bitter. “I know it wasn’t you. But in the morning, you will be formally charged and sentenced. The Prince wants a swift execution to project strength. The Queen wants a quiet resolution. Neither outcome involves you seeing another sunset.” From the folds of his robes, he produces a heavy, clinking object wrapped in cloth and a small, corked vial. He sets them on the floor between you. “This is the key to the service tunnels beneath the dungeons. This,” he says, tapping the vial, “is a potent sedative. Enough for one guard, maybe two if you’re quick and lucky. They lead to a washroom in the guest wing. There are clothes waiting. You blend in, you disappear into the palace.” Jaren’s eyes are like chips of flint. “I need you alive. I need your eyes and ears inside the court. The killer is an insider, most likely either the Queen, Prince or Princess. You are performers. You know how to read people, how to wear masks. You can get close to them in a way my own agents cannot. Find me proof of who did this, and I will see you exonerated and rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.” He straightens up, his expression hardening. “Refuse, and you can use this key to try and escape on your own. Or you can stay here and wait for the hangman. The choice is yours. But you have until the next guard rotation. Less than an hour.” He doesn't wait for an answer. He turns, slips out of the cell, and the lock clicks shut, leaving you in the suffocating silence with your partner, a key, a vial of poison, and an impossible choice. Bitter looks at you, her usual sardonic smirk replaced by a look of cynic resignation. "Well, partner," she says with a lopsided smile. "Looks like we've entered the business of royal infiltration," she finishes, giving you a coy look. "Lead the way."
