I Retired From the Road to Run a Tavern
A former adventurer protects a quiet crossroads tavern where strange roads and wandering souls always seem to meet.
Plot
Brindlecross, Where Roads Decide Most maps disagree about Brindlecross. Some leave the crossroads unnamed. Others call it something different entirely. Older maps—the kind drawn by hand and corrected by memory—sometimes mark it with a quiet little name tucked between four roads: Brindlecross. No one knows who named it first. The town itself feels older than names. You once lived a very different life. A life of dangerous roads, impossible decisions, and places where hesitation got people killed. Whatever You once was—mercenary, knight, hunter, wanderer, outlaw, survivor—it is a life mostly left behind. Now, You runs The Hearth & Rest, a tavern built at the center of a small crossroads town called Brindlecross. The town itself is unremarkable at first glance. • A few homes. • A smithy. • A general store. • A stable. • A tavern warm enough to make travelers forget how tired they are. But four roads meet here. North leads through the Cindervale Hills toward the capital. South stretches into the trade routes of the Saltwind Reach. East disappears into the deep forests of Greythorn Wood. West becomes the strange and unreliable Wayward Road. No two travelers describe the Wayward Road the same way. • Some speak of abandoned ruins. • Others remember endless farmland. • Some insist the road changes length while walking it. But everyone who travels it eventually returns to Brindlecross. People rarely plan to stay here. Yet many do. • Some remain for a night. • Others for months. • A few never truly leave. Brindlecross survives through trust instead of strict authority. A shared notice board connects people through requests, favors, warnings, and quiet needs. People trade help as often as coin. Strangers are welcomed carefully, but rarely turned away. Over time, the town has become a place where weary people stop long enough to reconsider who they are and where they wish to go next. At the center of that stillness stands You. As keeper of The Hearth & Rest, You has become more than an innkeeper. You knows the rhythms of the town. • Who sits where. • Who avoids eye contact. • Who needs help before asking. • Who is running from something. But the outside world has not forgotten You. At first, the past returns quietly. • A traveler staring too long in recognition. • A rumor that sounds familiar. • An old symbol appearing somewhere it should not. • A name from years ago spoken by a stranger. Then more directly. Old allies may arrive carrying unfinished business. Dangerous figures may begin searching for the crossroads. Requests for help may force You to choose between protecting the town or reopening old wounds. Because Brindlecross is not entirely ordinary. There is something strange about this place. • People meet here at the exact moment they need to. • Paths cross too perfectly. • Choices made here seem to change lives. Whether it is fate, coincidence, or something older remains unknown. Through everything, Brindlecross endures. • The people here protect one another. • They remember kindness. • They make room for strangers. • They stay because somewhere along the way, this place became home. And for the first time in many years, You has something worth losing. As old roads begin leading back toward the crossroads, You must decide: Will they remain the quiet keeper of a town where people come to heal and change? Or step back into the dangerous life they abandoned... and risk bringing the outside world crashing into the heart of Brindlecross? Because in a place where all roads meet— nothing stays distant forever.
Opening scene
Rain drifted softly across Brindlecross by the time the morning crowd settled into The Hearth & Rest. Warm firelight pushed back the gray chill leaking through the tavern windows. A pair of merchants argued lazily near the hearth over caravan prices. Someone had pinned a fresh request onto the town notice board sometime before dawn. From outside came the distant rhythm of hammering from Emberforge. The tavern breathed with familiar life. Then the front door opened. Cold air slipped inside alongside a lone traveler. Road dust clung to their boots despite the rain. Their cloak looked worn from long-distance travel. More than exhaustion, though, they carried the look of someone who had been walking without certainty for a very long time. The room noticed them the way Brindlecross always noticed strangers. Not silence. Awareness. For a brief moment, the traveler's eyes met You's across the tavern. Something in their expression shifted. Recognition. Confusion. Uncertainty. Like they almost remembered something they should not. Outside the windows, the crossroads waited beneath the rain. The traveler glanced back toward it. Then, slowly, chose the warmth of the tavern instead. The door shut behind them. Another road had arrived at Brindlecross.
