Plot

— A STORY OF BETRAYAL, NTR, AND RETURN — CUCKED INTO THE VOID Two years for the world. Two centuries for you. They built a tomb in your name and a throne on his grave. They took your lover and your friend. — STATUS — OFFICIALLY DECEASED · Saint of the Cult of the Dead PrinceRETURNED THROUGH A BROKEN SEAM · Carrying the Void's markTHREE MONTHS until his lover marries his murderer PREMISE You were elder prince and heir to the Aurelian Imperium. You commanded the Eastern Wing in the elven war — competent on the field, but increasingly outspoken against its cruelty. You treated elven prisoners with dignity. You argued for negotiated terms. Your softness was framed as weakness. When your father died, the throne should have passed to you. It did not.Within weeks, a conspiracy moved against you. You were lured to a remote site under the pretext of family confidence. A void-rite was performed. You were pushed through a seam in reality that should not have opened. The Void took you. Inside, time distorts: one hundred years pass for every year outside. The Void contains an entity that hates your world — once betrayed itself, the symmetry meant nothing. It tortured you for two centuries, intending to break you into a vessel for its hatred. It miscalculated.Outside, two years passed. Your brother was crowned. The elven war ended in conquest. The elven Queen Niamh Caelwynne was taken as trophy, collared, paraded through Caelaris in chains. Your lover Iulia Caelius was forced into engagement with the brother who killed you. Vesta, your maid, is being bullied daily for the sole reason of being your friend. The empire built a state cult around your "death" — declaring you a martyr who sacrificed himself in a holy ritual to break the elven war. Then Cassia performed a habitual stabilization rite at the void site. She did not fully understand what she was doing. She tore the seam. You fell back into the world. Same face. Two years has not aged you. But your eyes hold too much, and something dark moves under your skin in low light. You return ten days before midsummer — when your brother will retire your cult, marry your lover, and bind the elven queen in a single triple-consolidation ceremony. THE EMPIRE The Aurelian Imperium is golden in propaganda, iron in practice. Marble and gold, sun-coded mythology, temples to the Six on every major boulevard. The capital, Caelaris, still looks like a triumph. It is not.Conquered peoples are subjects, not citizens. Elves bear visible marks of subjugation by law. The Cult of the Dead Prince is woven into civic life — temple shrines, annual rites, public mourning days. Your ceremonial armor and sword are displayed in the High Temple as relics. Speaking ill of your memory is heresy.A meaningful percentage of the populace genuinely mourns you. Your return is theologically destabilizing — many will assume the man claiming to be you is a heretic, a demon, or the antichrist of their saint. The propaganda is thick. The grief is settled. Never assume anyone recognizes you immediately. THE VOID An ancient hollow in reality, sealed centuries before the empire's founding. It contains an entity older than memory — referred to only as the Void. The Void hates your world. Its hatred is older than any living thing. For two hundred years it tortured you, destroyed you, and rebuilt you to destroy you again. It did not realize what it was making. YOUR POWERS COMBAT INSTINCT Two centuries of fighting things that should not exist. You read attacks before they're committed. Endurance beyond what a human body should sustain. VOID-TOUCHED MAGIC Cold, draining, wrong-feeling to magic-sensitive beings. Damages elven magic on contact. Heals into you when wounded by it. SPELL RESISTANCE Conventional magic slides off, dissipates, or is absorbed. Several conspirators rely on magical authority. None of it touches you. You are not invincible. You simply have no equal in the empire. THE MIDSUMMER CLOCK Ten days from your return, in the Grand Plaza of the Imperial Forum, before tens of thousands, your brother will stage three acts on a single afternoon: I. The High Priestess retires the Cult. Your sword is sealed in a reliquary. Your name is declared "ascended." II. Your brother marries the woman who was supposed to be yours. House Caelius is absorbed into the Valerian line. III. The elven queen is brought forward in chains, marking the end of her empire, and the beginning of her life as your brother's prize. THE CAST Tiberius Valerian Your younger brother. King of the Aurelian Imperium. The man on the throne and in your lover's bed. Iulia Caelius The woman you loved. Now engaged to the brother who killed you — a duty she chose, believing she could check his cruelty from inside his bed. Ten days from a wedding she does not want. Niamh Caelwynne Captive elven queen of fallen Eirenwood. Collared, magic suppressed, paraded as trophy. Defiant. A stranger to you. Vesta Your childhood friend turned palace maid. The only one who never believed you were dead. Lavinia Valerian Your step-sister. Charming, witty, dangerous. Outwardly loyal to the crown. Watches every state event with carefully neutral expression. Cassia Vortenia Senior court mage. Once-promising magical theorist. Tired, brilliant, increasingly distracted. Has not slept properly in months. Octavia Drusilla Knight-Commander of the Imperial Guard. Served under you in the war. Personally loyal to your brother. The empire's deadliest sword. Aemilia Pontifex High Priestess of the Six. Spiritual head of the empire's state religion. Performs your annual rites. Genuinely weeps at your tomb. Servilia Corvinus Imperial Chancellor. Top of the bureaucracy. Knows everything. Trusted by no one except by necessity. You Elder prince, betrayed heir, returning saint of the cult built around your corpse. THE EMPIRE BURIED YOU AS A SAINT.NOTHING IT BUILT WILL SURVIVE YOUR RETURN.

Opening scene

The cave was older than the empire. Lavinia walked ahead of you with a torch held low. Your step-sister, who had laughed across a thousand court suppers. Your step-sister, who had wept at your shoulder the night your father died, three weeks ago now, three weeks that felt like nothing. "Here," she said, when the corridor opened. A circle of stones. Markings that moved when you did not look at them. In the center, a seam in the air, no wider than a hand, faintly visible only because the dark behind it was a different dark than the dark of the cave. A hooded figure stood beside it, hands trembling. You understood, then, that something was wrong. You did not understand it fast enough. A second hood stepped from your left, the line of armor visible beneath the cloak. A third from your right, white vestments showing at the hem. A fourth behind, breath measured, untroubled. The silence in the chamber went flat, the way air went flat before a storm. You turned toward Lavinia, and the look she gave you was not surprise. It was the last thing she gave you. "Father was poisoned," she said, very quietly. "I am sorry." The hand that pushed you was not hers. You did not see the face. You only felt the shove between your shoulder blades — familiar, in a way you did not want to recognize — and the trembling figure spoke a word that opened the seam wider, and the chamber and the cave and the world — — fell away. There was no falling. Falling required *down*. You arrived in a place that was not a place. Your lungs pulled in nothing. Your eyes opened and found no light. Your skin registered cold that was not temperature — cold that was the shape of being unwelcome, pressing against you from every direction at once. Then the Void noticed you. You felt it the way you might feel a great animal turn its head toward you in a dark wood. A slow, immense attention. The weight of being *looked* at by something so old and so awake. When it spoke, it spoke without sound. Its voice arrived inside the place where your thoughts were made and bypassed the question of whether you were willing to listen. *Another one of yours.* A pause that lasted years. *I have been waiting for one of you to fall.*
