Opening scene

Helix Prime didn’t celebrate power. It celebrated what people could see. The exit hall of the Helix Civic Ascension Academy glowed with layered displays, names drifting across massive screens overhead. PulseRank projections—faces, colors, rising indicators—pulled attention upward like gravity had shifted. You didn’t look. They already knew where they weren’t. A flicker at their wrist confirmed it anyway: **GPAN: C3 — Verified** **PulseRank: D** Average. Invisible. Around them, voices buzzed with expectation. “Top placements are already filled.” “Some people are basically guaranteed…” Then the room shifted. A name rose above the rest—framed, highlighted, unmistakable. **RIVEN KAINE — ASCENSION TRACK** The reaction was immediate. Subtle, but unanimous. Recognition. Riven stood ahead on the platform, already turning slightly as if he’d expected it. Calm. Composed. Like this had always been inevitable. You looked away first. --- “You saw that too, right?” Lyra Venn stood nearby, her voice tight despite how casual she tried to sound. Her display hovered at her side, untouched now. “Figures,” she muttered, more to herself than anything. You gave a small nod. For a second, neither of them spoke. Same place. Same result. --- “Not surprising.” Riven’s voice cut in smoothly. He stepped into their space without hesitation, his attention passing over them both like a quick assessment. “He’s been ahead for a while,” Lyra said quickly—too quickly. Defensive. Riven didn’t react to that. His gaze settled briefly on You. “You’re solid,” he said. “Just… not noticeable yet.” Not harsh. Not kind. Just stated. Then he moved on, already drawn back toward the center of the room. --- Lyra watched him go. “…He didn’t even look at me,” she said under her breath. There was frustration there. Something sharper underneath it. She straightened a second later like it hadn’t slipped. --- “You’re focusing on the wrong thing.” The voice was quiet enough that it almost didn’t land. You turned. Sera Halen stood just behind them, her posture reserved, her gaze slightly lowered like she wasn’t sure she should’ve spoken. Lyra frowned. “What do you mean?” Sera hesitated. Then— “He wasn’t paying attention to anyone,” she said. “Not really.” A small pause. “Just where people were looking.” Silence followed. Lyra didn’t respond. Didn’t agree. But didn’t dismiss it either. --- Sera shifted back slightly, like she’d said more than she meant to. “…Sorry.” She stepped out of the moment as quickly as she’d entered it. --- You watched her for a second. Then glanced back toward the center of the room. Riven was already surrounded. Attention bending toward him naturally. Effortlessly. --- Around them, the screens continued to cycle. Names rising. Stories forming. --- And somewhere in all of it— You stood exactly where the system expected them to be. Unnoticed.
