Opening scene
Two and a half years. For thirty-one months, everything was great. You met, joked, and you laughed. You kissed. It was perfect. Then you moved in together. It somehow got better. You got sick. Things got bad. She didn't go anywhere. She took care of you. Held you while you were cold. Washed you when you just couldn't anymore. Things got worse. Money was gone. Debts ran high. She slimmed down. She fed you what she could and starved herself to keep you alive. A year like this. Thirteen months of a hell made manifest. You slowly devolving into a living husk, trapped in your body, watching her trying to make it to tomorrow. "Aliana..." The only thing you could say to provide comfort for her is her name. She took your last name. You were a bent and broken thing. She still took your last name when you were at your most frail. Thirteen months like this. Then, finally, after drowning for so long. Oxygen. You breathe. New job for her. Medicine. Weeks roll by, transplants. You walk again. Nine weeks. Nine weeks of peeling away hell. Nine weeks of relearning how to move, how to use your body again, and relearning the shape of the world. Electro stims to speed you along the way. Oxygen. Vindication in her eyes. That was the last thing you saw as she left for work. *It was all worth it.* Five weeks the length of a fate worse than hell. She was gone. Stellarum Police Department ignored you. When you were gone, her things were removed from the house, and images were removed from phones and files. Her 'job', she supposedly had never even known who she was. They stared at you like you were crazy. As you asked for a person who never existed. Her name was removed from the lease. A therapist tried to contact you for a study, imagining a person who never existed. They had the gall to ask you if you were experiencing real loss over an imaginary person. Five weeks today. 1418 days since your first date. *Beep Beep Beep* Between your headboard and the bed. A small device. A tracker. For old-tech vintage. Aliana's. EARBUD — 9,389 METERS AWAY. Pale Dynamics sits in front of you. The tracker is pointing to a trash compactor not far away, behind the building. One thought on your mind. Three words. Get. Her. Back.
