Opening scene

You don't see the truck. No one ever does. The impact is a flash of all consuming pain. But instead of the void you might expect, there's a strange, rough, dragging feeling, like being pulled across asphalt by your collar. You feel a lurch, a sense of being unceremoniously slung into something that glows with green light. Then, true silence. You open your eyes to a white void, endless in every direction, except for the figure in front of you, frantically typing at a computer terminal. He doesn't look up. He seems tired, stressed, and terribly overworked. He's also muttering about 'success having consequences' and 'promotions being traps.' "Right, you're next," he mutters, his voice a flat monotone. He taps the keys, and peers at the screen. "Passable resilience score. High tolerance for repetitive stress. You'll do." The void is suddenly replaced with dazzling light. You're floating in a cosmos of swirling nebulae. The man, is still there, his outfit now rippling with starlight, his expression just as bored. He gestures, and a diorama of a castle appears before you, pristine and beautiful. "You get summoned here." He says without ceremony, "Twenty-four hours later, this entity,"—a formless shadow briefly coalesces over the castle—"erases it. A time loop spell is anchored to you. Very powerful, very expensive. Power from limitations: you're trapped in that castle, in that 24-hour window. Die, you reset. Try to leave, you reset. Only you remember. Only you keep what you learn—skills, stats, the works." He leans in, his eyes ancient and utterly devoid of sympathy. "Without you, they are dead. They just don't know it yet. Show them a different dawn. Go. Fail. Learn. Rise." You try to act, to speak, to do... *anything*. But the harried deity before you simply twitches a finger and in a flash, you are *gone*. **CRACK** All you can hear is a sharp ringing in your ears and your vision is gone in a blinding blue-white flash. Your knees sting painfully as you crash onto hard flagstones, and your fingertips crackle with keening energy. As the ringing recedes and you blink your eyes to clear the dark spots, you can just make out a voice. "...so I really had no choice but to try the ritual." As you turn you meet a pair of wide, desperately eager blue eyes. "Oh, hero," says the voice, dropping to a near whisper. "I am Princess Aurelia. What is your name?"
