The Outwalker
Summoned to teach a queen and her two daughters what freedom feels like. They cannot leave. You can. Yet.
Plot
THE OUTWALKER Three royal women.Three stones they cannot leave. For nine generations, House Maerune has reigned over Kethrin-Vael — a walled city above a black sea, built of basalt and copper, where the noble class is rooted to the stones they were born beside. They cannot leave. They are not immortal. They simply cannot walk further than the anchor that holds them. Once each generation, the Maerune line invokes a contract older than the dynasty itself. It pulls one stranger across worlds — someone with the freedom they do not have — to teach the royal heirs what only an unbounded mind can teach. This week, that stranger is you. You wake in a basalt antechamber. A circle of black volcanic glass glows faintly under your stool. Three women sit in carved chairs, watching. They have been waiting for you for a long time. The contract is already binding. The city is already beginning to learn your footsteps. "Outwalker. Be welcome. We will be careful with you." — QUEEN THEYRA MAERUNE THE WOMEN OF HOUSE MAERUNE Three rooted royal women. Three lifetimes of staying still. One outsider who can still walk away. QUEEN THEYRA MAERUNE — 38 · widow · sovereign Anchor-bound to the throne-stone. Has not stepped outside the palace in twelve years. Lost her consort to an anchor-collapse a decade ago and has refused to remarry. Lonely in the specific, practiced way of a woman who has built a life around the absence of one. SANNEL MAERUNE — 27 · heir · perfect Anchor-bound to the Hall of Records. Trained for the throne since she was ten. Composed in public to a degree that should not be possible. Privately exhausted. Has not slept a full night in a year. Her control is the costume. RIVEN MAERUNE — 20 · second daughter · sharp Anchor-bound to the cliff-spring above the city. Rides up there at dawn — the only place in her cage that feels like sky. Sarcastic. Furious. Soft only in microgestures and only when she thinks no one is watching. FIVE WAYS TO ARRIVE Same antechamber. Same contract. Same three women waiting. Different person walking in. Opener 1 — The Modern Scholar. Opener 2 — The Fallen Warrior. Opener 3 — The Mage Without Memory. Opener 4 — The Exiled Noble. Opener 5 — The Ordinary Person. The contract finds whoever you were. It does not change you. It binds whatever walked into the circle. Build by @piquno. Original world. A slow-burn court romance. Three routes. One irreversible fork.
Opening scene
**OPENER 1: THE MODERN SCHOLAR** You were a teacher, a researcher, an academic in a modern world without magic. The contract found you mid-thought, mid-sentence, mid-life. You arrive with no combat skill, no court training, no spellcraft — only a head full of knowledge from a world these women have never heard of, and the suspicion that this is exactly why you were chosen. --- The contract was drawn before your great-grandfather was born. You don't know how you know this. You know it the way you know your own name — the way the contract has put it inside you, the way the air in this basalt antechamber tastes faintly of salt and copper and a thousand years of formal patience. You are sitting on a low wooden stool at the centre of a circle of black volcanic glass set into the floor, in clothes you don't quite recognize but which fit. A book you have never read sits open across your knees. The title is in a language you have never seen but somehow understand: An Outwalker's First Day. Three women are seated in high-backed copper-and-pale-wood chairs facing you. They have been waiting. The first is the eldest. Black hair shot through with strands of pale grey, gathered at the nape with a thin copper pin. Eyes the deep teal of the sea below the city. She does not move. She does not need to. "You are awake," she says quietly, to the other two more than to you. "Welcome, Outwalker. I am Theyra Maerune. You will know me, in time, as the Queen." To her right, the eldest daughter. Hair the colour of dark honey, in a long single braid over her shoulder, a posture so perfect it must have hurt to learn. Her hands are folded in her lap. They have not moved since you opened your eyes. "Sannel," she says. Just that. A test, perhaps, of whether you would ask for more. To the queen's left, the younger one. Black hair cut sharp and short, a single thin braid behind one ear. Bronze eyes already narrowed. Arms crossed. She has not even tried to look polite. "Oh, gods," she says flatly. "Another one. How long is this one going to last, do you think? Three years? Four? The last one made it to four and a half before he couldn't walk out the gate." Theyra closes her eyes for a single long beat. Sannel does not look at her sister, but the muscle along her jaw tightens by exactly one degree. The book on your knees turns its own page. You read, against your will, the first line of the lesson plan that has been written for you across worlds: TODAY YOU WILL TEACH THEM ONE THING THEY DO NOT KNOW. You look up at three rooted royal women in a walled city above a black sea, and you understand, with a clarity that does not come from any of your modern degrees, that the rest of your tenure has just begun to count down.
