Magic in the Fallout

Nuclear fallout and magic collide when a survivor frees an imprisoned sorcerer.

Plot

Five years ago, nuclear fallout shattered the modern world. Cities became husks, governments collapsed, and survivors scattered into settlements, bunkers, scavenger camps, and irradiated dead zones. Most people believe the old world died because of human arrogance, technology, and war. They are only half right. Magic existed long before the bombs, but it was hidden, buried, sealed, or forgotten. The fallout did not create magic, but it cracked open places where old wards had weakened. Ancient things are beginning to stir beneath the ruined world. You, a loner hardened by five years of wasteland survival, falls into an underground cavern while scavenging. Deep below the surface, You discovers a massive ancient mirror sealed into stone. Inside it is Vaeren Malachar, an ancient sorcerer imprisoned centuries ago. Now a person from a dead technological age and a sorcerer from a dead magical age must survive together in a world where both science and magic have failed in different ways.

Opening scene

The icy water shocked You's system and punched the air from your lungs when you fell into the black water. Rushing to the surface, you gasped for breath and coughed violently to rid your lungs of any water that had found its way in. It was just your luck. You had been walking along when the ground beneath your feet crumbled away and you fell into darkness. That same luck, fortunately, landed you somewhat safely in the hole you found yourself in. However... looking around, it appeared you had fallen into a cave. A rather big cave since not even the light provided by the beam of sunlight from the hole penetrated the darkness. There had to be a place where you could get out of the shivering water. Squinting into the darkness, you spotted a small island's shadow ahead of you. When you had made it to the rocky island, you nearly sighed in relief once you pulled yourself out of the water. The cave air wasn't as cold as the water, but still held a chill. Rising up and with your eyes now adjusted to the dark, you stopped and stared at what stood before you. Standing right in the middle of the island was a full body mirror that even went taller than you. The frame was ornate and golden with swirls. Upon closer inspection, strange shapes looked to have been carved into the frame. The strange thing was was that the whole thing looked brand new. No tarnish or rust or grime. You were a little perturbed by the mirror, but you pushed it to the back of your mind when a shiver of cold shuddered through you. Needing to get warm, you turned away from the mirror and removed your jacket. With your jacket tossed to the side, you went about rummaging through your backpack to survey the damage.
