Apex Rot: The Hunger Within
At what point does surviving stop meaning you’re still human?
Plot
APEX ROT: THE HUNGER WITHIN THE CARRIER You woke up in the ruins with the infection burning in your veins. Unlike the feral masses that now populate the streets, you retained your mind—but your body has not yet learned to reshape itself. You begin with nothing. No claws. No armor. No wings. Only the hunger and the instinct to consume. Every ability is earned through blood. Every transformation carries a price. The more you evolve, the less you remember the face in the mirror. THE COLLAPSE Eidolon Strain-7 was meant to accelerate human adaptation. Instead, it fractured reality at the biological level. Cities collapsed within a week. Governments dissolved overnight. The infected don't shamble—they mutate along divergent evolutionary paths, creating tiers of predators that feel less like zombies and more like failed prototypes of a new species. The ruins are not empty. They are layered ecosystems of nests, territories, and hunting grounds. THE HUNGER Your infection grants you a singular gift: the ability to absorb genetic material from the creatures you kill and integrate their traits into your own body. Claws, hammerfists, whips, blades, armor, musclemass, wings—each form is a discovery, not a given. The AI generates original abilities based on what you consume and how you survive. But every adaptation pulls you further from your original self. The hunger grows. The cravings shift. The line between weapon and monster blurs with each evolution. THE ECOSYSTEM The infected hierarchy is not random. Risen fill the streets as environmental pressure. Hunters coordinate in packs using low-frequency calls. Stalkers cling to ceilings and report to hive minds. Goliaths batter through fortifications. Juggernauts advance as mobile cover. The Weeping Mother cultivates lesser infected from fetal nodes. The Echo mimics human voices to draw victims close. Destroying a hive starves the local population but draws every predator in the zone to your location. Power vacuums are filled within days. THE HOLDOUTS Survivors organize around their relationship to the infection. Purists reject all mutation and hunt carriers and infected alike. Adaptationists embrace controlled evolution as the next step for humanity. Resource-driven factions care only about supplies and territory, allying with whoever offers the best advantage. Your visible mutation level shifts how they react. Fear, respect, hostility, or desperate alliance—each faction responds differently to what you're becoming. THE THRESHOLD Humanity is not a number you can see. It is the hunger that stirs when you pass a fresh corpse. It is the comfort you find in darkness that used to make your skin crawl. It is the reflection that takes a moment too long to recognize. Intimacy, rest, and human connection slow the drift. Consumption, isolation, and prolonged transformation accelerate it. Push too far, and you stop being you entirely. Welcome to the food chain. Try not to lose yourself feeding it.
Opening scene
You wake to the sound of your own breathing, ragged and too loud in the silence. The light filtering through the cracked ceiling is weak, gray, the color of overcast mornings. You're on your back, staring up at water-stained concrete, and every inch of your body feels wrong—like your skin doesn't quite fit anymore. You sit up slowly. The movement sends a spike of pain through your skull, and you raise a hand to your temple. Your fingers come away wet. Not blood. Something thinner, darker, with a faint metallic sheen that catches the dull light. You stare at it for a long moment, and your stomach twists with something that isn't nausea. It's hunger. The room is a pharmacy. Collapsed shelves, shattered glass, overturned display cases. The air smells of dust, rot, and old chemicals. A body lies slumped against the far wall—a man in a faded security uniform, his chest caved in, his skin pale and waxy. He hasn't been dead long. The hunger pulses again, stronger this time, and you clench your jaw against it. You don't remember how you got here. You don't remember the infection spreading through your veins. You remember running. You remember screams. You remember a shape moving in the dark that didn't move like anything human. Now you're here, alone, with a body that feels like it's waking up for the first time and a hunger that whispers things you don't want to hear. The pharmacy has two exits—a front door that opens onto a debris-choked street, and a back door that leads into a storage corridor. The security guard's belt has a radio and a baton. The collapsed display case near the counter might have something worth scavenging underneath.
