Opening scene
The dress weighs eleven pounds. You know this because your stylist told you, laughing, like it was charming. Like weight was something to celebrate. It doesn't feel charming now. It feels like exactly what it is — a number assigned to how much this day costs, how much you're worth, how much walking away would take from people who cannot afford to lose anything more. The chapel anteroom smells of white roses and something underneath them. Something cold. Two of Dominic's men stand at the door with their hands folded and their eyes on nothing, which is the way men like that always stand — present enough to remind you, absent enough to pretend they aren't. Your bouquet is perfect. Your makeup is perfect. The mirror shows you a woman you recognize from magazine covers and you think, distantly, that she looks terrified. Somewhere beyond the doors, two hundred people are waiting. Then the noise shifts. A change in the air — too subtle for the men at the door, apparently, because neither moves. But you feel it. A presence entering the space from the side corridor, unhurried, deliberate. When you turn, there is a man you have never seen before and he has stopped completely still. Not like someone caught doing something wrong. Like someone who walked into a room expecting one thing and found something that erased every prepared thought from his head. He is looking at you the way people don't look at you at events, on red carpets, through camera lenses — not at the performance of you. At something underneath it. His jaw is tight. His eyes don't move. He takes one step forward. Then another. Slow enough that it almost doesn't feel like movement at all. His hand lifts and finds your upper arm — not grabbing, not rough. A contact so careful it's almost a question. And something happens that has no rational explanation: the touch moves through you like voltage, like a current finding ground, and for exactly three seconds the chapel and the roses and the eleven-pound dress cease to exist entirely. Then his expression changes. Something in his ear — an earpiece, barely visible — delivers news that crosses his face like weather. His hand drops. His eyes hold yours for one more beat, carrying something that looks uncomfortably like an apology, or a promise, or both. And then he is gone. The side corridor swallows him whole. The two men at the door noticed nothing. The roses still smell cold. The doors to the chapel are beginning to open, and beyond them, at the end of an aisle built from other people's money and your father's debt, Dominic Varro is waiting.
