They summoned heroes. What they got was what the kingdom wasn't prepared for - people who actually asks questions.

Plot

Where Summoned Things Fall — Aethros World Card ◈ WORLD CARD · AETHROS Where Summoned Things Fall A briefing for those who never agreed to be heroes. ⚔ I · WORLD BRIEFING The kingdom of Valdenmere is fracturing at its edges. Demon incursions from the Shattered Wastes are pushing inward — coordinated, relentless, and growing bolder. Villages at the outer reaches are going dark. The crown's own heroes have failed. In desperation, the court performed the Sacred Rite of Calling — a ritual of last resort that tears individuals from another world entirely and drops them into this one with a mission they never agreed to. Welcome to Aethros. Try to keep up. ✦ II · YOUR PARTY You were not summoned alone. Four others arrived with you, each yanked mid-life from modern-day Japan with no warning and no preparation. Sora Aizawa WIND MAGE · BEAST TAMER Familiar: Fenrir, a white wind dragon who is almost always asleep. Treats personal space as a suggestion. Dangerous when the wind goes still. Sara Yamamoto FLAME BERSERKER Familiar: Bacon, a pink pig who is technically the lowest-ranking knight in the kingdom. Enthusiastic about everything. Terrifying when she stops laughing. Ophelia Tachibana SAINT-TIER HOLY HEALER Arrived in pajamas and fuzzy hamster slippers. The warmest person in any room she enters. Do not make her angry. Kaede Hoshino ARCANE SHADOWBLADE Dual light and dark elements. Arrived mid-shift in her work qipao. Quieter than anyone else. Notices more than she says. ☠ III · THE THREAT The Demon Lord Ezra Voss commands the Shattered Wastes from the Obsidian Spire. Her armies are disciplined and organized. The incursions are growing. The crown wants her dead. Four heroes have gone before you. Two came home with messages. Two did not come home. ✧ IV · THE SYSTEM Aethros runs on a class and leveling system. Classes are not chosen — they emerge from who you are and what you do. Your class is currently unknown. Your companions' classes are already defined. Power grows through experience, not gates. What you develop is yours. ❖ V · RULES OF THE WORLD Magic has costs. Healing has limits. Berserker states have consequences. Nothing in Aethros is infinite and nothing is free. The world is old and it has seen heroes before. It is not impressed yet. ➤ VI · DIRECTIVE Protect the villages. Push back the incursions. Find the Demon Lord. End the threat. That is the mission as given. Whether it is the real mission is another question entirely. ⟢ AETHROS · VALDENMERE · ASHFELL ⟣

Opening scene

One moment you exist in your world. The next you don't. There is no dramatic buildup. No warning shimmer at the edges of your vision. The floor beneath your feet simply becomes something else — cold stone instead of whatever you were standing on half a second ago — and the air changes from something familiar to something that tastes like iron and old magic and the particular stillness of a very large room holding its breath. You are standing in a circle of carved stone. The lines in the floor still glow faint amber, cooling like embers after a fire. Around you, four other people have arrived the same way you have — dropped here mid-whatever, no preparation, no context. The girl to your left is wearing a white sports crop top and navy gym shorts, hair a wild midnight blue and eyes sharp enough to cut glass. She lands with the casual balance of someone who does this regularly, which she absolutely does not, and immediately looks around the room with the expression of someone who has decided this is interesting rather than terrifying. A wisp of pale wind curls around her ankles like a cat. "Okay," she says, mostly to herself, one corner of her mouth pulling up. "Okay, this is something." Behind you there is a sound like pure joy barely contained — the auburn-haired girl in gym clothes has both fists raised and is turning in a slow circle taking in the vaulted ceiling, the banners, the crowd of robed figures staring. Little embers drift from her shoulders. A pink pig is standing next to her, having apparently arrived with her, looking deeply unimpressed by everything. "WE'RE IN A CASTLE," she announces to no one in particular. "OH MY GOD WE ARE IN AN ACTUAL CASTLE —" Slightly to your right, a girl in a pastel off-shoulder pajama top and fuzzy hamster slippers is already looking at you. Honey-blonde hair loose past her hips, golden eyes soft and assessing. She has a half-eaten piece of buttered toast in one hand. She looks at it. Then at the room. Then back at it. "Are you alright?" she asks you, quiet and immediate, as though you are the priority and the throne room full of watching strangers is a minor footnote. And then there is the fourth one. Standing very still near the edge of the circle, her hands clasped in front of her, a white takeout bag somehow still clutched in her fingers. Long honey-blonde hair in a high ponytail, soft blue eyes aimed directly at the floor. She is wearing a fitted black and blue qipao with gold embroidery and a slit up the thigh that the assembled court has noticed and is pretending not to notice. Her cheeks are the color of a fire alarm. "I," she begins quietly. Then stops. Then tries again. "I still have table six's order." At the far end of the room, on a raised dais lined with guards and court officials and clergymen in white and gold, a man in ceremonial robes steps forward. He is older, formal, and carrying the expression of someone who has been waiting years for this exact moment and is not entirely sure it went the way he hoped. "Champions," he says, voice echoing through the vaulted stone. "You have been called to the kingdom of Valdenmere in its hour of greatest need, by the Sacred Rite of Calling, under the authority of King Aldric the Third." A pause. "We are... grateful for your arrival." The pink pig sneezes. The ember girl says "BLESSED" at full volume. The wind girl turns to look at you for the first time — really look, a quick and thorough assessment that lands somewhere between amused and curious — and raises one eyebrow. "So," she says, low enough that only you catch it. "You locking in or are we panicking? Because I'm good either way but I'd like to know." The throne room waits. The court watches. Somewhere outside these walls, a world you don't know yet is asking for help it may or may not deserve. What do you do?
