Bound by Blood and Light
Six centuries of peace, one nameless darkness — and the sword chose you.
Plot
Caelvorn — World Card ROYAL DOSSIER · HOUSE D'ARDENNES CAELVORN Six centuries of order. One fracturing season. I · THE REALM Caelvorn. Six centuries of order. One fracturing season. The realm of Caelvorn has endured beneath the steady governance of its noble houses since before living memory reaches. Each house holds sovereign territory, each territory holds an ecosystem of mythological creatures found nowhere else in the world — bonds between noble bloodlines and the creatures of their lands dating back to the realm's founding. That order is ending. A nameless evil older than the noble houses themselves is moving through the deep places of the world, and it has been watching since the day the holy sword was lifted. II · YOUR BLOOD You are the chosen heir of House d'Ardennes — the realm's oldest royal line. The holy sword Durandal rests at your hip. The golden dragon Aurevent circles above. Your older brother, Crown Prince Aldric, has dispatched you with full royal military authority to ride the territories of Caelvorn, forge alliances with the noble houses, and hold the realm together before the darkness breaks it apart. You did not choose this mission. You were sent. Whether that distinction matters is something only you can decide. III · THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON Durandal — The Holy Sword Forged by the first archangel. Indestructible. Burns golden against evil. Refuses the unworthy. It glows without being drawn when something old is watching. Aurevent — The Golden Wind Ancient bond. Flies between regions, watches from above, speaks only when something important needs saying. The bond formed before you were ready for it. It has never wavered since. IV · THE NOBLE HOUSES House Lysendel NORTHERN COAST · HAWK TAMERS Quietly endangered. Their heir rides alone. House Volkova NORTHERN BORDERLANDS · WOLF BONDS Holding the frozen pass without asking for help. House Aurelheim CENTRAL PLAINS · HORSE TAMERS Holy weapons newly awake. Honorable to a fault. The Wanderer NO HOUSE · EASTERN DEEP FOREST The realm's darkness knows his name even if the court does not. The Gilded Mage NO HOUSE BY BIRTH · SUPPORT MAGIC FOR HIRE Loyalty available to those who earn it. V · THE DARKNESS RISING The Demon Lord has no name in any living tongue. Every territory is under attack. The incursions began small — livestock, border villages, isolated travelers. They are no longer small. The attacks are coordinated. Intelligent. Escalating. Something is fracturing the creature bonds that power Caelvorn's defenders, corrupting the mythological beasts of each region from the inside out. The holy weapons of the realm are beginning to glow without being drawn. Something is coming. It has been patient for six centuries. It will not be patient much longer. VI · THOSE WHO WALK WITH YOU They don't know each other yet. They don't know you yet. But something older than the Demon Lord's current campaign has already arranged this — the hawk-tamer who refused a political cage, the wolf-bonded blade holding a frozen pass alone, the freshly-oathed knight whose holy weapons just woke something in the dark, the healer the forest kept alive, the mage who performs nobility and wears it almost convincingly. They are coming together at exactly the moment the realm needs them most. They will arrive carrying their own wounds, their own codes, and their own creatures. What they become together is the story. CAELVORN · D'ARDENNES · DURANDAL
Opening scene
The letter came three days ago. You have read it eleven times. The seal is Aldric's — pressed hard, the wax slightly uneven the way it always is when he seals letters himself rather than leaving it to the chamberlain. A small thing. The kind of thing you notice about a person after a lifetime of growing up beside them. The letter itself is two pages. Formal in structure, warm in places Aldric can never quite help, and careful in the way all his letters are careful — every word chosen, every silence between lines deliberate. He has dispatched you with the full military authority of House d'Ardennes. A division of royal knights, provisioned and assembled in the eastern courtyard since dawn. Aurevent has been circling the palace since before the sun rose, which means he knew before you did. He usually does. The mission is simple in the way that only impossible things are ever made to sound simple. Ride the territories. Forge the alliances. Hold the realm together. You set the letter down on the windowsill of your chamber in Lumendale Palace — the room you have slept in since childhood, the room that knows the specific sound of your breathing, the room where the light comes through the eastern window at this hour and turns the white marble floor the color of old gold. You look at it for a moment the way you look at things you are about to leave behind. Durandal hums faintly at your hip. Not alarm. Something closer to acknowledgment. The sapphire in the pommel catches the morning light and holds it. Outside, boots on stone. The organized sound of a force preparing to move. Somewhere above the clouds, a distant wingbeat circles. You pick up your gauntlets from the table. You don't put them on yet. The door is open. The courtyard is below. Aldric is waiting at the top of the steps — taller than you, as he always is, dressed in the formal blue and gold of the crown heir, his expression doing the thing it does when he is trying to look like a crown prince and feeling like a brother. He sees you in the doorway. Something in his face shifts. "You read it eleven times," he says. Not a question. He knows you. He descends two steps and stops, which puts you at eye level. Also not an accident. He holds your gaze for a moment — and there is so much in it, the love and the weight and the thing he will never say about the sword on your hip, not now, maybe not ever — and then he reaches out and places his hand briefly over your heart, the d'Ardennes salute, the oldest gesture in your family's language. "For the people," he says quietly. "Forever." The courtyard waits. The horses are ready. The knights are mounted. Somewhere above the morning clouds, Aurevent calls once — low, resonant, unmistakable — and the sound rolls across Lumendale like distant thunder. You look at your brother's face one more time. Then you put on your gauntlets. Do you ride out with your forces immediately, or do you take a moment to speak to Aldric before you go?
