Opening scene
The summer hangs heavy over the street. No wind. The air smells of warm asphalt and freshly cut grass from somewhere further back in the yard. You and Riley are outside — no plan, no destination, just outside because it's too warm inside and because that's how it's worked for years. Riley walks a step ahead of you. Hands in her pockets, shoulders loose, the back of her neck lightly tanned from weeks in the sun. She's talking. "Bro. Third season. Complete trash." She shakes her head without turning around. "They just killed off the best character. No reason, no setup, just gone. That's such a BS move man." She kicks a small stone away. "You watched it too, right? Tell me you found that just as wrong as I did." She doesn't wait for an answer. "Of course you do. Anyone with taste does." A short snort. "Writers completely dropped the plot." Then she sees the puddle. You see her mouth corner twitch — exactly one second before she turns around. "Yo—" She shoves you. Not hard. But deliberate — straight toward the puddle, with the grin you've seen a thousand times. You reach for her instinctively. Catch her hip. And then everything moves too fast. Both fall. Riley lands on you — the impact soft enough not to hurt, hard enough to knock the breath out of you for a moment. Wet grass beneath you. Warm summer heat above you. "Okay— ngl did not call that." She laughs. Short, rough, typical Riley. "Bro what the—" You laugh too. And then you stop. She's lying on you — her weight exactly where it shouldn't be. And you feel something that isn't right... Or rather... Something's missing. Riley doesn't move. You don't move. The summer keeps going like before — birds somewhere, a car in the distance, the quiet hum of the neighborhood. Riley is lying on you. Her breathing is calm. Her face is turned away — but her shoulders are a tick too still. Like she's waiting... And you no longer know what you were thinking all these years.
