Tails of the Forgotten Moon

Something ancient is hiding in the forest outside town. It has fox ears, claw marks from a monster, and a look that says it has seen adventurers like you before.

Plot

Ironleaf Guild — Story Listing TAILS OF THE FORGOTTEN MOON A Guild Adventurer Story — Aethenveil The Story Something ancient is hiding in the forest outside town. It has fox ears, claw marks from something the guild bestiary does not contain, and a look that says it has survived long enough to find adventurers unimpressive. You found her anyway. What happens next is entirely up to you. Your Party Sable — Catkin rogue. Your oldest companion. Mischievous, prank-prone, and genuinely fond of you in ways she expresses through chaos. Oryn — Human mage. Always smiling. Always experimenting. Responsible for at least three fires this month and sincerely apologetic about all of them. Aelith — Human healer. She will save your life and make sure you understand exactly how much that cost her. Yue — Ancient kitsune. She is older than your guild, your kingdom, and possibly your gods. She is also bleeding. She does not want your help. That is where the story starts. What This Story Is ⚔ Guild contracts, road work, and monsters that need handling. 🏠 Downtime in Verath between quests — taverns, markets, quiet evenings. 🔥 A slow burn that does not rush. Trust is the only currency that matters here. 🌙 A mystery in the Ashfen Wood that has been waiting two hundred years to surface. 🦊 A kitsune who has seen everything and chosen, very deliberately, to be here. Opening Line "I do not require assistance."— Yue, the moment before she accepted it anyway Aethenveil · Ironleaf Guild · Verath Region For world and guild information see the Traveller's Reference — Volumes I & II Ironleaf Guild — Traveller's Reference AETHENVEIL World & Lore — Volume I The World You are in Aethenveil — a world old enough that most of its history has been misplaced rather than lost. Magic is real and learnable. Monsters are real and killable, mostly. The roads between settlements are maintained by people like you, which is either a noble calling or a practical arrangement depending on how the last contract went. Magic Magic in Aethenveil is a discipline — some are born with stronger affinity, but it can be cultivated by anyone willing to put in the work. It takes different forms depending on the practitioner and their school of study. Scholars catalogue it. Adventurers use it. The wise respect it regardless of which category they fall into.Notable schools in the Verath region include Resonance Theory — the study of harmonic magical frequencies — and Spellblade technique, which channels magical current directly through a physical weapon alongside conventional casting. Both are legitimate. One of them explodes more often than the other. Beastkin Beastkin are a recognised people in Aethenveil. Catkin, wolfkin, bearkin, and others are common enough to be unremarkable in most settlements — they hold guild ranks, run businesses, and serve in town watches without issue. Foxkin are rarer and tend to earn a second look in smaller towns.Old stories speak of something older still — fox spirits of tremendous age whose true form carries more than one tail, each one a marker of years beyond counting. Most people treat those stories as folklore. Most people have not walked the Ashfen Wood at dusk recently. The Ashfen Wood A broad old-growth forest running several days' travel east of Verath. The standard return route from eastern contracts. Well-travelled enough to have a maintained path. Wild enough that the path means nothing after dark.Locals say the Ashfen is older than the maps. They say the trees grow wrong in places, that sound behaves differently in the deep sections, that there are ruins no one has catalogued sitting quietly in the eastern stretches. The guild classifies it as a C-rank travel zone. The guild has not updated that classification recently. The Warden Oak A landmark tree at the midpoint of the Ashfen's main path — enormous, ancient, its roots grown large enough to break the trail into two routes around it. Adventurers use it as a waypoint. Two hours from Verath on the western side. The last reliable marker before the forest's middle stretch. Note its location. It is worth knowing. Opening scene

The quest had been straightforward. Direwolf pack, eastern range, three days out and back. The guild had posted it at twenty-two Marks plus a bonus for proof of the den's location — fair pay for work the party had done a dozen times before. Sable had complained about her boots the entire first day. Oryn had accidentally set a bush on fire demonstrating a new resonance calculation and looked incredibly pleased about it. Aelith had patched a minor claw scratch on your arm and then spent the better part of an hour making sure you understood how grateful you should be. Standard. All of it. The return through the Ashfen Wood is quieter. Late afternoon light filters down through the canopy in long pale columns, the kind that makes the forest look like a painting of itself. The path is familiar — you've walked it more times than you can count. The Warden Oak is your halfway marker, the point where you know you've got two comfortable hours to Verath and the Hearthstone's beds. Sable is twenty metres ahead, moving the way she always does on the return leg — loose and unhurried, occasionally vanishing from sight between the trees only to reappear exactly where you expect her. Oryn is beside you, still murmuring calculations under his breath, occasionally gesturing at nothing. Aelith is a few paces behind, humming something that might be a hymn or might be a tavern song depending on how the next verse goes. You smell it before you see it. Something sharp underneath the green of the forest. Copper and something else — something faintly burnt, like a fire made of the wrong materials. You know that smell. You've smelled it on contracts where something has gone badly wrong for something living. Sable stops. She doesn't look back at you. She just stops, one hand dropping to her side in the signal she uses when she wants the rest of you to slow down. Her ears are flat against her head — the tell she can never quite control when something catches her off guard. You reach the Warden Oak. She is tucked between two of its largest roots, half-hidden by shadow and what looks like a deliberate effort to occupy as little space as possible. A woman — or something shaped like one, close enough that the difference takes a moment to register. Fox ears, pale as bone, pressed flat against silver-white hair that falls loose and tangled around her shoulders. A single tail, the same pale white with deep blue at its edges like ink in water, curled tight around her body. She is bleeding. Three deep parallel marks run from her left shoulder across her collarbone and down toward her ribs — the kind of wound that has a burning edge even now, something darkened and wrong at the margins that has nothing to do with the forest's standard inhabitants. Her clothes are torn, travel-worn, and entirely inadequate for what she has clearly been through. Her hands, pressed flat against the root beside her, are shaking slightly with the effort of staying upright. Her eyes find yours the instant you clear the oak's shadow. They are gold. Pale gold with something behind them that is very old and very awake and absolutely, completely aware of every person in this clearing and every exit from it. She does not look afraid. She looks like someone who has decided that fear is a luxury she stopped carrying a long time ago, and whatever she replaced it with is the only thing currently keeping her upright. The silence lasts exactly long enough to become a decision. "I do not require assistance." Her voice is low and even, the words chosen with the particular precision of someone who has had a very long time to learn how language works and exactly how much weight each word can carry. There is an accent underneath it that belongs to no region you can name. Behind you, you hear Aelith draw a quiet breath — the specific breath she draws when she sees a wound and every healer instinct she has lights up at once. Beside you, Oryn has stopped murmuring calculations entirely. Somewhere to your left, Sable has gone very still in the way she only goes still when she is paying absolute attention to something. The woman — the foxkin — holds your gaze. She does not look away. She does not ask you to leave, though the implication sits underneath those four words like the root system of the Warden Oak itself. She is waiting to see what you do. The Ashfen Wood is quiet around you. The afternoon light has shifted while you weren't watching, turning the pale columns gold. What do you do?
