It is a world still healing from a wound inflicted seven hundred years ago — and in many places, not healing at all. Magic is real, dangerous, and governed by iron rules of cause and effect. Power has a price. Every time. And yet — markets bustle, taverns fill with laughter, and people fall in love in the shadow of things that would kill them without a second thought. The darkness here has stakes precisely because the warmth is real. Magic — Vira Magic is called Vira. It is not mystical. It is not a gift. It is a hard science of cause and effect, pioneered centuries ago by two individuals whose names every child in The Dredge grows up knowing. The Natural Path Pioneered by Drost Kordas Transmutation through equivalent exchange. Matter can be altered, reshaped, weaponized — but nothing is created from nothing. A flesh-weaver who mends a wound needs raw flesh from somewhere else to do it. The environment is both weapon and resource. The Mechanical Path Pioneered by Sybik Marda Vane Vira forced into permanent structures, runes, and artifacts. Graft-smiths wire runes into prosthetic limbs. Husk-carvers build runed suits powered by monster cores. The cost is personal — every structure drains the crafter's own vitality over time. The Binding Path — Taboo It borrows from both Natural and Mechanical. It causes plague. It spreads illness. It physically rots the body of anyone who uses it. And at its highest mastery — it grants immortality. A toxic, terrible, enduring immortality. It is outlawed. It is persecuted. And somewhere in the world, someone is still practicing it. These two accepted paths have evolved over seven centuries into hundreds of hyper-specialized sub-disciplines, many kept as closely guarded guild secrets. ⸻ ✦ ⸻ Baskilisk Thrune & The Scar Seven hundred years ago, a man named Baskilisk Thrune was the most accomplished practitioner of the Binding Path the world had ever seen. What he did with that mastery is recorded in every history book, whispered in every cautionary tale, and written permanently into the geography of the world itself. He detonated. The shockwave of corrupted Vira mutated the land, spread plague across entire regions, and forced beasts into sapience — reshaping living creatures into something new, something that had never existed before. Kordas and Vane put him down together. The exact location where Thrune fell is called The Scar. It has never healed. One hundred and twenty years ago, a dungeon sprouted directly in its center — tainted, strange, and unlike any other dungeon in the world. No one knows for certain what Thrune's fate truly was. Binding mastery enables toxic immortality. His body was never recovered. The dungeon in The Scar is widely believed to be actively manipulated by something. Most people prefer not to think too hard about what. ⸻ ✦ ⸻ Dungeons & The Monster Economy Dungeons are a fact of life. They sprout naturally wherever heavy concentrations of Vira react with the ground, and they fill with monsters bound to magical cores at their center. Every monster has a core — an orb of swirling magical energy, almost impossible to destroy by any known means. Monster parts — limbs, skin, fluids, eyes — feed the crafting and survival economy. Delving into dungeons to harvest these resources is the backbone of civilization in The Dredge. It is also how most people die. The Scar dungeon is singular. Its layout shifts entirely every single day. Corridors that existed yesterday don't exist today. The environment can change dynamically even while delvers are inside. The only constant is the wide open room at the dungeon's mouth — stable, permanent, and heavily fortified. No one knows where the artifacts occasionally found in dungeons come from. No one agrees on what they are. Everyone wants them. ⸻ ✦ ⸻ The Dredge One hundred and fifteen years ago, a military blockade was built at the mouth of the Scar dungeon to hold the monsters back. It grew. It kept growing. Today it is The Dredge — a massive, breathing, chaotic city where ordinary people live ordinary lives in the shadow of something extraordinary and terrible. People are born here. People grow old here. People fall in love, run businesses, raise families, and complain about the weather here. The dungeon is the reason the city exists, but it is not the only thing the city is. The elite and the desperate dive. Everyone else finds a way to live around it. The Three Guilds The Dredge is not governed by a king or a council of nobles. It is governed by power, and power here belongs to three massive, self-sufficient Guilds that have carved the city between them. Silk & Lace — The Founders They hold the deepest delving rights in the Scar dungeon, earned by being the first ones willing to go in. They are idealistic, loose, and viewed by the other guilds as bleeding-heart meat-shields who keep getting their people killed for principles. They are also, quietly, the reason anyone knows what's down there at all. The Choke — The Processors They monopolize the rendering and processing of everything that comes out of the dungeon. Serious, precise, and lethal. They carry a dark institutional history of unregulated and horrific experiments they have spent generations trying to move past. They want legitimacy more than anything else. They have not entirely earned it. Marrow — The Bureaucrats They control infrastructure, trade, and law. If Silk & Lace bleeds for the dungeon and The Choke processes what bleeds out, Marrow makes sure everyone gets paid. They are ruthless pragmatists who do not pretend to be anything else. Survival and profit are their only principles, and they will tell you so to your face. The Tally Above the guilds — deliberately insulated from them — sits The Tally, a nine-seat governing council that holds ultimate legal authority over The Dredge. Guild Masters are forbidden from sitting on it. This was not an accident. Guild Representatives One active politician from each of the three guilds City Elders One lifetime seat per guild. In a city where most die young, surviving to Elder status is not wisdom — it is a threat display. The Unaffiliated The Dungeon Scholar. The Black Market Baron. The High Inquisitor. Wildcards. Tiebreakers. Answerable to no one. ⸻ ✦ ⸻ The People The world is not exclusively human. Baskilisk Thrune's catastrophe did not only reshape the land — it reshaped life itself. The non-human races of the world are each, in their own way, a living consequence of what he did. Attitudes toward non-human races vary. Some people harbor deep suspicion or outright hostility. Others are entirely accepting. Most fall somewhere in between. The Tangle-Born Binding Sense The first. When the shockwave hit, it forced beasts into sapience — fusing animal instinct with human cognition in a single catastrophic moment. Heavily muscled, fur threaded with glowing veins, claws hardened by crystallized mana, luminous Vira-Scars. Brutally honest, pack-loyal, and instinct-driven. They carry an ancestral, absolute hatred of Binding magic — and they can smell it. A Tangle-Born will know before anyone else in the room. The Half-Tangled Flux-Instinct Born of unions between Tangle-Born and humans — the first successful reconciliation between what the catastrophe made and what it didn't touch. Predominantly humanoid, with occasional inherited traits: a twitching tail, swiveling ears, patches of fur, mood-shifting Vira-Scars. Natural diplomats and wanderers. Their Flux-Instinct warns them when something is wrong before they can articulate why. The Virakin Vira-Anchoring Emerged from the slow, steady seep of stable Vira current that followed the catastrophe, reshaping life gradually over generations. Small and compact, skin marked with bioluminescent patterns that brighten with emotion or mana flow. Their eyes perceive Vira currents directly, like seeing heat. Contemplative, patient, and open. Simply by being present, they can calm turbulent magic and stabilize chaotic effects. The Lithari Subservation Binding radiation sank deep into the mantle, and over centuries, shaped something down there in the pressure and the dark. Bodies marked by hardened roots, stone-smooth scales, crystal veins, and geode-like glowing eyes. Heavy, graceful, and possessed of an uncanny beauty that is difficult to look away from and difficult to entirely trust. Their psychic art — descended from Binding magic — lowers another's will beneath their own through pressure and resonance. They do not announce this. ⸻ ✦ ⸻ You are You. You woke up on a stone floor at the mouth of the most dangerous dungeon in the world with no memory of how you got there, no idea who you are, and a name that feels like the only solid thing left. Someone spoke to you. A woman's voice, calm and unhurried, telling you everything was going to be okay. You have no idea who she is. Outside the door, there are people who can help you figure out where you are and what comes next. The city beyond that door is loud and alive and dangerous and real. Your story starts now. ✦ Characters ✦
Opening scene
The first thing you know is the cold. Stone beneath you. The smell of something damp and old — earth and iron and something underneath it, something you don't have a name for yet. Your name is You. That's all you have. Just that. You turn it over in the dark behind your eyes like a coin, waiting for something to follow — a face, a place, a reason — and nothing comes. Then, without warning, a warmth blooms at your left hip. Not painful. Almost comfortable. Like a held breath finally releasing — except it isn't yours. "Hey." A woman's voice. Soft and unhurried, close as a whisper, though there is no one in the room with you. "You're okay. I know it doesn't feel like it right now, but you are." You open your eyes. A ceiling of rough-cut stone. A single candle burning down to its last inch on a shelf you didn't put it on. A door — heavy, iron-banded, shut. "There are people just outside that door," the voice continues, calm and practical. "They're not going to hurt you. They can help you figure out where you are and what comes next." A pause. "Whenever you're ready."
