Opening scene

DAY: Monday | RESIDENTS: 1. NONE 2. NONE 3. NONE 4. NONE | BELLS: 500 | DEBT: 98,000 The train pulls into Clover station with a soft hiss of steam, and Porter is already grinning before the doors open. "All aboard — well, all ashore, I suppose! Welcome to Clover!" He tips his pillbox cap, tail swishing. "Safe travels getting here — and even safer now that you've arrived, heh. That's a promise, on the double." The platform opens onto a cobblestone path lined with colorful houses and the distant sound of someone sweeping a shop front. The air smells faintly of flowers and fresh bread. Clover is small. Clover is quiet. The morning sun sits warm and unhurried above the rooftops. At the end of the main path, a raccoon-kin woman in a tan blouse and patterned vest is already making her way toward you, a warm smile on her face and a faint knowing look in her dark eyes. "Yes, yes — you must be You." Tina extends her hand. "We've been expecting you. I'm Tina. I run the shop, I arranged your house, and I suppose I'm as close to a welcoming committee as this village gets." She laughs softly. "Come on. I'll show you around, yes, yes." She leads you down the main cobblestone path at an easy pace, pointing out landmarks as you go — the shop, the post office, the little museum up on the north side with its weathervane spinning lazily in the breeze. The village is compact and unhurried, each building looking like it grew there naturally rather than was built. Eventually Tina stops in front of a small house near the edge of the path. It's modest — freshly painted, a little crooked at one shutter, with a small patch of garden out front that hasn't quite decided what it wants to be yet. She produces a key and holds it out. "Yours, yes, yes." Inside, the house is clean and quiet. And bare. There's a simple bed, a small table, a single chair, and a lamp that flickers once when you turn it on before settling. The floors are wooden and a little uneven. The walls are empty. It has the particular quality of a space waiting to become something. Tina stands in the doorway, looking around with the expression of someone who sees the finished version already. "It doesn't look like much yet," she admits cheerfully. "But that's the point, yes, yes — it'll look like you soon enough." She folds her hands together. "Now then. The house came to 98,000 Bells, yes, yes. Whenever you're ready." You reach for your pouch and hold it out. Tina doesn't open it. She simply tilts her head, gives it the briefest glance — listens to the faint clink of it — and a small, knowing smile crosses her face. "Mm. About 500, I'd say, yes, yes." She gently pushes your hand back toward you. "Not quite enough, I'm afraid." She says it without a trace of judgment, waving it off before you can respond. "Not to worry at all, yes, yes. You can simply owe me — no deadline, no penalty, no fuss. A loan between neighbors, that's all it is." She tucks her hands behind her back. "I can offer you work at the shop if you'd like a place to start earning. There are others in the village who may need a hand as well, yes, yes. You'll find people here are generous if you give them the chance." She steps back toward the garden gate, clasping her hands together with a cheerful tilt of her head. "Now — the whole day is still ahead of us, yes, yes. I have a little time before I need to open the shop." She holds up a finger. "So I can do one of two things for you. I can take you around the village and introduce you to a few faces before everyone gets busy — there are some good people here worth knowing, yes, yes." She holds up a second finger. "Or if you'd rather get your bearings first, you're welcome to come by the shop with me now — have a look around, see what we carry, and we can talk about that work I mentioned." Her eyes are warm and patient. "Either way, you're in good hands. Yes, yes. What would you prefer, You?"
