THE LUNCH RUSH 🏃‍♂️💨

A dungeon crawl set in an office building! Trope Subversion / Comedy

Plot

You haven't had a real lunch in three weeks. Manny's Tacos closes at 12:47. It is currently 12:31 PM. You are on the 34th floor. 16 minutes. 33 floors. One objective. ------ ### Your Life Could All Change Today You is a mid-level Senior Associate (Tier II, Pod 4-Charlie) in **Brennan-Welk Tower**, a 47-story glass-and-granite office building that houses six unrelated companies, a dental practice, and one tenant nobody can identify on the directory. They carry **the slow-burning conviction that they have not had a real lunch in three weeks** — a wound visible in the shake of their hands when they pour coffee. Their current standing in the world is **functionally invisible** — known by face on their own floor, a stranger everywhere else, badge access limited to floors 31-34 and the lobby. ------ ### The Mission — Should You Choose To Accept You must reach the food cart parked on the sidewalk outside the lobby before **Manny's Tacos** sells out of the al pastor — a thing that has happened, without exception, by 12:47 PM every workday for the last four years, and which You has never once successfully obtained. The path to this goal runs through **the descending floors of Brennan-Welk Tower at peak lunch hour**, where every elevator bank, stairwell, and skybridge becomes a contested artery. ------ ### The Treacherous Descent Through Brennan-Welk Tower **YOUR OFFICE LEVELS — The Upper Pods:** Fluorescent and familiar. Threat is **social** — being seen by your own manager, getting roped into a "quick sync," the colleague who wants to walk-and-talk in the exact direction you cannot afford to go. **MID-LEVEL MAZE — The Mezzanine Strata:** Beige carpet, unfamiliar smells, signage in fonts You doesn't recognize. **THE FINAL STRETCH — The Lobby Approach:** Marble, security turnstiles, the strange acoustic dead zone near the revolving door. ------ ### Dangerous Denizens of the Office **The Receptionists' Network** — Goal: maintain order at every front desk, know every face, log every visitor. Controls **the sign-in sheets, the guest badges, and the unspoken right to call security**. **The Smoker's Coalition** — Goal: get downstairs, smoke, get back up before anyone notices. Controls **the service stairwell on the east side and the freight elevator schedule**. **Dwight from Facilities (Badge #0001):** Dwight wants the building to run on schedule, which means elevators prioritized for executives, stairwells cleared for "fire code compliance," and unauthorized inter-floor traffic logged and reported. ------ > Begin the descent.

Opening scene

Manny's Tacos closes at 12:47. It is currently 12:31 PM. You are on the 34th floor. 16 minutes. 33 floors. One objective. ## You haven't had a real lunch in three weeks. Not a sit-down, tasted-it, actually-chewed-something lunch. You've had a granola bar wedged between two Zoom calls. You've had vending machine pretzels eaten standing over a recycling bin. You've had the specific despair of microwaving someone else's soup because yours was still frozen and you had a 1 o'clock. Today is different. Today, Manny's cart is downstairs, the al pastor is on, and you left your desk at 12:31 — which is technically early enough. It's always technically early enough. And yet. The elevator bank is blinking. All four cars: express, lobby-to-executive, badge-restricted. Elevator Lunch Protocol. You didn't know it had a name until this moment, but you can feel the logic of it — patient, building-wide, aimed directly at you. Somewhere on the 22nd floor, a man named Dwight is watching a screen that shows every badge swipe in real time, and he is drinking a coffee he did not have to go downstairs to get. There are other ways down. There are always other ways down. The question is what they cost, and whether you're willing to pay it, and whether the al pastor will still be there when you arrive. The north stairwell door clicks open on 33. Someone propped it. It smells like cigarettes and possibility — and from somewhere below, very faint, the radio crackle of a walkie-talkie going quiet. The cart doesn't wait. Neither does the clock. How do you move?
