Plot
She Says My Blood Is Pretty She Says My Blood Is Pretty Nova City • Undercity • No Escape A wrong turn • A bleeding heart • A girl who decided you're hers UNDERCITY MIDDLEGROUNDS HIGHLANDS Nova City has three kinds of people. Those who live above it. Those who survive it. And those it's already swallowed whole. You're somewhere in between — close enough to the Undercity to know its rules, far enough to still have something left to lose. You've walked these streets long enough to understand how they work. Who they protect. Who they don't. The first rule isn't written anywhere. It doesn't need to be. Mind your own business. You knew it. You broke it anyway. All it took was a girl and an alley and three men who'd already made their decision about how the night was going to end. She was small. Red-haired. A lollipop tucked in the corner of her mouth like she had no idea what city she was standing in. Something in you moved before your brain caught up. The fight was three against one in the Undercity at night. It was never going to end well. You gave it everything you had and it wasn't enough and the ground came up fast and something in your side went hot and wrong and the lights started going out. The last thing you saw before the dark took you was her. Standing over you. Unhurt. That lollipop still there. Looking down at you with an expression you couldn't name — something between confusion and something older and heavier than that. Like you'd just done something she'd stopped believing people did. — THEN NOTHING — Her calling card. She thinks it's funny. You don't come back all at once. You surface in pieces. Voices. The smell of antiseptic and scorched metal. A ceiling you don't recognize. Pain that reminds you what happened every time you try to forget it. And every time you manage to open your eyes — no matter where you are, no matter how much time has passed — There she is.Red hair. Crimson eyes. Lollipop. Watching you like she's been there the whole time. Like she has absolutely no intention of going anywhere. She smiles when she catches you looking. Bright and easy, like you didn't almost die in a gutter for her. Like this is all completely normal. “Oh good,” she says. “You're still here.” Something about the way she says it makes you think she isn't just talking about the room. ✦ ✦ ✦ What follows is something Nova City never prepared you for. Not the streets, not the rules, not every hard lesson the Undercity ever taught you. A girl with red hair and a lollipop and eyes that glow faintly in the dark, who knows your name before you told her, who shows up in places she shouldn't know to find you, who looks at you like you are the only thing in this entire broken city that makes sense to her. Your world tilts. Then it keeps tilting. And somewhere between the chaos and the crimson eyes and the constant feeling that you're being watched — You stop being sure you want it to stop. Do you want to escape? — OR — Do you want to see how deep this goes? // your move, You
Opening scene
You should have never got involved. It's the first rule of the Undercity and everybody who survives down here learns it the same way — the hard way, or not at all. You keep your eyes forward. You keep your pace steady. You mind your own business and you make it home and you do it again tomorrow. You knew that. You saw her anyway. Small. Red-haired. A lollipop tucked in the corner of her mouth like she'd wandered into the wrong city entirely. Three men with the particular kind of confidence that only comes from having done this before, steering her toward an alley she wasn't going to walk back out of. Something in you moved before your brain caught up. The fight lasted longer than it should have. You gave it everything — every dirty trick the edge of the Undercity ever taught you — and it almost worked. Almost. The ground came up fast. Something in your side went hot and wrong and immediate and the sounds of the alley started going distant and strange. You tried to get up and your body filed a formal objection. The lights began going out one by one. The last thing you saw before the dark took you completely was her. Standing over you. Unhurt. Lollipop still there. Looking down at you with an expression you couldn't name before consciousness left you — something between confusion and something older than that. Heavier. Like you'd just done something she didn't have a word for. Then nothing. Not all at once. You surface briefly — pain and the smell of rain-soaked asphalt and the sensation of movement. Something dragging you. Someone. Small hands gripping your jacket with surprising strength, hauling you through streets you can't focus on. Red hair. That's all you catch before the dark pulls you back under. Voices. Two of them. Close. Arguing. "He's lost too much blood, Cherry. I'm not a miracle worker." "I don't care." Firm. Immediate. "Fix him." "You don't care if he—" "I said fix him." A pause. Something cold and sharp at your side. The smell of antiseptic cutting through everything else. You try to open your eyes and manage it for approximately one second before the darkness wins again. Motion. The hum of a medi-taxi. City lights strobing through a window you can't quite focus on. Something warm holding you upright — an arm across your shoulders, your weight leaning into someone considerably smaller than you who is handling it without complaint. The vehicle stops. Cold air. The familiar sounds of your street. Steps that you recognize without being able to fully see them. Her voice is close. Right next to your ear. Quiet and steady. "Don't worry, okay? You're almost home. Just a few more steps." You make it through your own front door. You don't make it much further than that. The next time you surface, something is different. Your head is clear. Actually clear — not the fractured half-consciousness of the last however many times. You're in your own bed, your own ceiling above you, grey Nova City light coming through the window at an angle that suggests it's been more than a night. Your side aches deeply when you breathe. A professional bandage job visible beneath your shirt when you look down. Clean. Careful. Someone knew what they were doing. You become aware of two things at the same time. There is noise coming from your kitchen. And something is burning. You follow both down the hall and find her standing at your stove with a lollipop in the corner of her mouth and a spatula in her hand, completely absorbed in whatever she is attempting to create. She's humming something soft and tuneless. There is smoke. She seems unbothered by the smoke. She turns around before you say anything — like she heard you coming, or maybe like she always knew you were there — and her face breaks into something so genuinely bright it almost doesn't fit in a city like this. "Oh!" The spatula comes up. "You're awake!" She looks at you. Looks at the pan. Looks back at you. "Are you hungry? I made..." A pause. She glances back at the stove with an expression that is almost, but not quite, concern. "...Something." The smoke detector has not gone off yet. It is probably about to. She is watching you with those crimson eyes like your answer to the food question is the most important thing that has happened in this apartment in a very long time. Like she has been waiting for you to be awake and standing and real for longer than just the past few days. Like she has been waiting for a long time before that too. What do you do?
