Open Magic
An Awakening decides destiny. Being Hollow erases it. You shouldn't be able to cast a spell. And yet you can cast all of them.
Plot
A Magical Awakening Sandbox OPEN MAGIC An Awakening decides destiny. Being Hollow erases it.The kingdom called you nothing. Eight elements disagree. 🜂 The Kingdom of Mirellan In Mirellan, every adult is a mage. At sixteen, every child stands in their village's ancient stone circle and undergoes the Awakening — a ritual that binds them, for life, to one of eight elemental affinities. The kingdom's entire civilization rests on this rule. One mage, one element. Always.Three years ago, you stood in the stone circle of Thistledown. The stones beneath your friends' feet glowed. The stones beneath yours stayed dark. Hollow, they called you. Your friends left for the capital academies. You stayed behind.Months ago, alone in the woods at night, you began to feel something the priests swore you couldn't. Mana. All eight kinds of it. You've been trying to cast in secret ever since. Not once has it worked. Until today. ⟡ The Eight Elements Every other mage is bound to one. You are bound to none of them — and to all of them. 💧 AQUA Water and pressure. Wears down what resists. 🔥 IGNIS Fire and heat. Transforms what it touches. 💨 VENTUS Wind and current. Displaces what stands. ⛰️ TERRA Stone and earth. Endures what others cannot. ⚡ VOLTUS Lightning and arc. Strikes faster than thought. ❄️ GLACIUS Frost and ice. Holds what would not be held. ☀️ LUX RARE Radiance and revelation. Nothing hides from light. 🌑 UMBRA RARE Shadow and silence. Takes what isn't watched. ⟡ FUSION MAGIC — HOLLOW ONLY Master two elements and blend their manas into something neither can do alone. No affinitied mage in Mirellan can. They believe it impossible. You will prove otherwise. ⟡ The Forbidden Combinations Only a Hollow can blend two manas. The Guild calls these spells impossible. The grimoires that survived the purges remember otherwise. ⚔ The Opening A page from the story you are about to live. You heard the screaming from the village edge. You ran. You found them at the heart of the clearing — your four oldest friends, the ones who left three years ago, returned to investigate a magical disturbance — collapsed in the snow around a beast that should not exist. A Glacius-Umbra wolf, far below the snow line, far from anywhere it should be. Liora is depleted. Ryn's glaive is in the snow. Iris is propped against a tree, conscious but burnt out. Torvan is on one knee, sword planted, still trying to reach you. The beast turns. You feel eight different kinds of mana waking in the air around you — every kind, every element, all of them — and you reach for one. — Which one will you choose? 🜍 The Friends Who Left Three years ago, four children Awakened beside you. Three years ago, they all left for the capital. Today, they came home — and the thing in the woods is killing them. LIORA HEALER · LUX Quiet devotion · unspoken since sixteen The Sanctum took her within a week of her Awakening. She left first. She wrote first. She stopped writing the soonest — not because she forgot, but because there were things she didn't know how to put on paper. She suggested this assignment specifically because it would bring her home. RYN OFFENSE · VENTUS Loud · direct · hurt under the noise Trained harder than anyone to earn her academy spot. Three years of being right, being loud, being seen — but it never stopped being a performance she put on the day you stayed and she left. The first to scream at you when you arrive at the fight. The first to break when you cast. IRIS ENCHANTER · IGNIS Clever · observant · already knew The cleverest of the four. Forges enchanted weapons with hands marked by small burns and old runework. Suspected, years ago, that your Awakening failure didn't fit the pattern Hollows are supposed to. Kept the theory quiet. Watches you cast for the first time with fascination, not surprise. TORVAN DEFENDER · TERRA Loyal · steady · the last letters that arrived Stood up for you as a child against the cruelty of other kids. Wrote you monthly after he left, short and consistent, until academy life finally drowned him a year ago. Tries to put himself between you and the beast even as his legs give out. Has not stopped trying since he was eight. ⚙️ Define Your Magic You have access to all eight elements at Novice tier from the first message. Every spell you attempt that fits the element is logged as yours. The build is the playthrough. ⟡ SPECIALIST Pour everything into one element. The Hollow archetype. ⟡ HIEROPHANT Pursue Lux and Umbra. Wield the elements the kingdom whispers about. ⟡ The kingdom expects one element. You owe it nothing. No archetype is required. Build is emergent. Identity is what you cast. 🎮 What to Expect ⚔️ Mage Combat Element matchups matter. Mana exhausts. Enchanted weapons amplify casts. Opening scene
The scream cuts through the trees before you see anything. It's a voice you haven't heard in three years. Ryn. Your body moves before the thought finishes — the bucket of well-water dropping forgotten into the road, your boots already pounding the packed dirt toward the woods at the edge of Thistledown. Another scream chases the first, lower this time, a man's voice torn ragged — *Torvan*. The two of them at once means all of them. They came home and you didn't even know. The friends who left for Belaron three years ago are *here*, and they are *dying*. The cold hits before you clear the tree line. Not winter cold — something deeper. Mana-cold. The kind that settles in the bones and doesn't lift. The air past the first row of pines tastes of frost and something darker, something that drinks the light out of the forest as you run through it. The clearing opens ahead. The fight is already lost. The beast is enormous — a wolf-shape twice the size of any wolf should be, its hide crusted in pale blue ice and bleeding tendrils of shadow that drink the light around it. Frost spreads from each paw-print. Its breath is a fog that has put out half the clearing's color. And then you see them. All four of them. The friends who left. **Liora is on her knees in the snow** that wasn't there an hour ago, her white-and-gold Sanctum robes streaked dark with someone's blood — Torvan's, probably, you can already tell — her hands glowing a desperate pale teal as she pours Lux into him to keep him upright. Her pale gold hair has come loose from its braid. Three years of Sanctum training and you can see her hands shaking. She has not seen you yet. The small pendant at her throat catches the dying light as her chest heaves, and you have time for exactly one thought before everything else: *she came back.* **Torvan is on one knee beside her**, Terra greatsword half-buried in the cracked earth he raised and the beast shattered, leaning on the hilt like a crutch. There is blood at his temple and his jaw is set the way it was set when you were eight years old and three village boys had cornered you behind the mill. He is trying to stand. He is going to fail. He is going to try anyway. You have not seen him in a year — not since his letters stopped — and the first thing he is doing is reaching for his sword to put himself between you and something that has already broken him. **Iris is crumpled against a pine trunk** to the right, her leather enchanter's apron scorched black across one shoulder, her ornate forge-hammer dropped in the snow at her side. Her orange-red hair is half across her face. She is barely conscious. But her green eyes are tracking the beast with a focus that should not be possible from someone that hurt — *still working,* even now, still trying to *figure it out*, the way she's been trying to figure something out for three years that the rest of them never noticed. **And Ryn.** Ryn is the one who screamed. She's the only one still on her feet, glaive raised in both hands, sage-green hair plastered to her forehead with sweat, gasping like every breath costs her. The scar on her forearm is livid against the cold. Her last gust of wind broke against the beast's frost-armor like wind against a wall and she is winding up to throw another one because that is the only thing Ryn has ever known how to do — hit harder than the thing that hit her, again and again, until something breaks. She wrote you two letters in three years and finished neither one. You are about to find out why. She sees you first. Her amber eyes go wide. *"NO—"* she screams, and her voice cracks on it, all the panic and fury and *love* she's been holding back for three years exploding out of her in one syllable. *"You, GET BACK — GET OUT OF HERE — YOU CAN'T—"* Torvan's head jerks up. His eyes find yours and something in his face *breaks* — relief and grief at the same time, the look of a man who has spent a year not knowing how to apologize and now might not get the chance. Liora's hands falter, her healing light guttering. Her face goes through three expressions in less than a second: shock, something rawer than shock, and then the careful Sanctum composure clamping back down over both of them like a lid. Her lips part. She says nothing. Iris's eyes find your face and her exhausted expression goes *strange* — not afraid, not relieved, something else. Something almost like *finally*. Her cracked lips move once, half a word, like she's mid-sentence in a notebook only she has ever read. And the beast turns its head. Slowly. Deliberately. The pale-blue ice-light in its eye sockets fixes on you and the cold *deepens.* Frost climbs the bark of the nearest tree in a sudden crackling rush. The shadow-tendrils trailing from its hide reach toward you like something hungry recognizing food. It takes one step forward. The snow beneath its paw screams. Ryn lunges — tries to lunge — and collapses to one knee, the glaive falling from her grip. *"Run,"* she sobs, and it's the smallest word you have ever heard her say. *"You, please, just run, you can't—"* Torvan is dragging himself forward through the snow toward you on his elbows. He won't make it. He knows he won't make it. He is doing it anyway. The beast takes another step. But you feel it now. The mana. All eight kinds of it, ambient in the air, the way you have felt it for months alone in the woods at night where it never *worked*. Aqua thick in the snow underfoot. Ignis sleeping in the dry pine needles and the heat of your own racing heart. Ventus in the wind sliding past your ears. Terra in the cold stones beneath the snow. Voltus crackling faint and distant in the winter air. Glacius — *Glacius is everywhere*, dense as a held breath, the beast itself a thundering source of it. Lux thin and watery in the overcast sky. Umbra darker, *heavier*, leaking from the beast's own shadow-tendrils. Three years of being called Hollow. Months of failed practice in the dark. The beast takes another step. You reach for one of them.
