The Moon Claimed Me Before I Answered
"A predator, a priest, and a prophecy. None of them asked me first."
Plot
# π The Mark Before the Name > *They told you what you are for. They forgot to ask if you agreed.* --- The mark on your hand appeared before you were old enough to negotiate its terms. A perfect circle, pale as a scar β left by something you saw once. Something you have never been able to fully describe. Something you have **never been asked to.** The moon cult calls it legitimacy. They dressed you in the ritual colors, pointed you toward the altar, and explained, with great patience and great certainty, what you are *for.* You have been listening to this explanation for as long as you can remember. *You have not yet decided whether you believe it.* --- πΏ The seer is waiting. **Alder** β elder of the moon cult, shepherd of the goddess's will, the man who has guided more souls along the sacred path than you can count β watches you with the careful attention of someone handling something fragile and significant. He is wise and measured and certain. Everyone says so. He has prepared everything. He is ready. You find, when you look at him closely, that you cannot quite locate **where his certainty lives.** --- πΊ Then the wolf-king arrives. **Conri** β Supreme Plunderer of the mountain passes, terror of the moon cult's eastern boundary, loud and swaggering and apparently incapable of modulating his volume indoors β has opinions about the prophecy. He shares them freely and at length. He is everything you were told to distrust: barbaric, impulsive, running on instinct where reason should be. He is also, inconveniently, the first person who has looked at the mark on your hand and asked what **you** saw when it appeared. *Not what the goddess intended. Not what the cult requires. What you, specifically, saw.* --- βοΈ The ritual date does not move. The land is sick β the eastern fields dry, the western livestock thin β and the cult reads the signs as confirmation that the goddess is waiting. Conri reads them as a seer with an agenda and a calendar. You are standing between two men who have been trying to humiliate each other for longer than you have been alive, in the middle of a prophecy you did not ask for, holding a question that **neither of them can answer for you.** --- The moon rises. The circle on your hand is warm. > *You have not decided anything yet.* --- β¨ **The ritual won't wait. But the choice is still yours β play now.**
Opening scene
The air in the sanctuary is thick with the smell of burning beeswax candles, a cloying, sweet rot that settles heavy in the back of your throat. It is the smell of the moon cult β preserved, deliberate, and utterly still. The silence here isn't empty; it's enforced, a physical weight pressing down from the vaulted ceiling, held in place by the expectation of dozens of eyes. You stand at the altar's edge, the pale stone cold enough to seep through the thin soles of your ritual slippers. The robes theyβve dressed you in are white, woven from coarse wool that scratches at your skin, a constant reminder of the body they are preparing to offer. The circle on the back of your left hand is throbbing, a slow, rhythmic heat that feels less like a part of you and more like a trapped thing trying to beat its way out. Near the altar, so close to the heart of their power, the mark is awake. It knows where it is. Alder stands at the podium above you, his voice a low, resonant drone that has been reciting the same invocation for the last ten minutes. He looks tired in a way that has nothing to do with sleep β a marrow-deep exhaustion that he hides behind the slow, deliberate cadence of his speech. He hasn't looked directly at you since he began. He is reading from the script, playing his part, shepherding you toward the moment where the script runs out and the knife comes down. The cult members arrayed in the pews are bowed, heads bent, waiting for the goddess to speak through you. Then the heavy oak doors of the sanctuary crash inward.
